housing

Hi, we will be heading over the end of August but would try to see what is availble in our price range. Does anyone know of any websites that list rental homes. We would like to be by the sea down by the ECR road. Which leads me to a silly question...I am sure you are used to them by now, Is the ECR commute dangerous to and from Tidal park?

Thanks again!

try...
99 acres and...
Per Square Yard

On of the best local sources is The Hindu newspaper property section which is published every Saturday. It is available as an e-paper.

It requires registration and is no longer free (Haven't looked at it for ages). Given that it costs less than Rs150 to get the paper every day for a month I don't know how they can charge Rs400 for 30 days access! Register on a Saturday to get the most number of Saturday editions!

Waiting for small ads to download as whole-page images is pretty daunting, but these are real local ads with real local prices and you'll also pick up agents numbers (you'll get those from the above sites anyway).

Once you are here, then you can see local newspapers for individual areas too.

Can you give us a clue on your price range? I think the sea-view houses, with garden, swimming pool, etc, not too far out, will be over Rs1,00,000 a month.

In what way do you mean, 'safe' to commute on the ECR? The worst times for that road is probably the late evenings when the youngsters are returning from their drinking parties at the resorts . But it is Chennai traffic! Any you may (at first) be a little shocked and amazed at the 'real india' you will see if your driver knows the shortcuts between the East Coast Road and the Old Mahabalipuram Road.

Oh... and the OMR... now that will be an experience, as it seems unlikely that they will finish building it in the forseeable future. A fact that does not at all reduce the amount of traffic on it!

If we want to live in South Chennai off ECR near the sea (or on)and
spend about 1-1.5 lacs/month what area should I search for when searching for properties. Also, is it hard to find pet friendly houses? Thanks!

Palavakkam, Kotivakkam, Nilankarai, to name a few.

Please note that Chennai is one of those cities where only a handful of places are exclusively posh; it is very mixed, and expensive housing can co-exist with fishermen's huts, especially in coastal areas.

Some research with wikimapia, google earth, google maps etc should help you get a feel for the localities and proximity.

Even with all the 'my house'; 'my friend's house'; rubbish on wikimapia it can still be useful for locating areas. Having got coordinates, Google Earth allows you to zoom in closer, and Chennai is in reasonable resolution.

1 to 1.5 lakhs will get you the best that is available in Chennai, so take your time and look around and don’t settle if you are not fully satisfied. Brokers are very pushy so don’t cave in easily, make sure you put your foot down and let them know that you are not ready to settle for anything that does not meet your needs. As Nick mentioned you can look around those areas.

Do people mind renting to those who have a dog? I would think at that price they wouldn't. My fear is that the choices are getting fewer and fewer.

Thanks!

Having dogs as pets in India is common, so most of them will rent a houses for people with pets. If you want to find a good place you have to do lot of searching, since the real-estate sector is not an organized sector in India there will be lots of confusion and the process itself will look so complex for a person from USA.

Tip: Never let the brokers know your budget, let them know your requirements and let them come up with the rent. Most of the times they will inflate the price and try to get more, so be ready to bargain.

Hi,

I live in Palavakkam (VGP layout to be exact) and the place is really nice. There are a quite a few posh houses in the area (more like villas) and some which have (like mine) 3 - 5 apartments in it. But there are none of the big apartment houses. And it is like Nick-H said: it is a bit mixed there, as you may find the empty plots in the area quite untidy sometimes. There are also a lot of dogs (stray ones and pets), and it is very near the beach. I work in Ascendas which is around the corner of Tidel Park and it needs me 20 minutes to get there by car. You may also want to check this website www.igeps.com. These guys helped me finding my apartment. They also have some of their offers on their website incl. pictures that might help you to get an idea of housing in Chennai

Hi, we have looked at the igeps website and have let our agent know what houses we expect to look at while there. We are working with a company called ISO. Hopefully we will find a good one!!

Try a guy we have used. Really polite, hard-working and resourceful -- has a lot of contacts and scans the newspaper ads for leads too. Ramesh 9841312797. Tell him KK Tiwari referred you. Happy house hunting
