help required for decent accommodation

I'm back .... No luck finding accommodation that is Western-standard , so in the offchance that an expat knows of something going or someone leaving soon , I need :

an apartment in Alwarpet, modern facilities
15 mins max drive from the Sheraton
80 sq meters +
preferably with pool and gym, and I mean a real pool, not those littel paddling pools ..

My budget can go to 2,5 Lack but let's be serious , I am sick of ppl trying to rip-off westerners : have they not seen what you can get for this price anywhere in a major Western city ?

As usual all help gratefully received

Boat Club is kind-of just accross the road from the Park Sheraton --- but I suspect that 2.5 Lakh is probably just enough to cover the gardener's tip there .

This is way off my screen, but I'd say that you should be able to get a house with a pool in the garden for that kind of money, but you'd have to move a little way out down the ECR.

No, not really.

Well... I don't know...

As an area, it has managed to hype itself almost out of existence, and prices are fantastic.

It's pretty, though!

Buying?

I've got a lovely Chennai pebble here. I don't really want to, shooting myself in the foot and all that, but I guess I could let it go for 2.5 lakh... Hmmm, no, sorry: the price just went up to three lakh.

Actually, the stupid, almost-countable-by-the-hour price increases have settled down, and the manic buying has stopped. But prices are not falling.

I'll take it!

I've always wanted that pebble, and such a bargain too! Please oh please sell it to me!

(...excuse me, ignore me, am confused, checked an online property site that looked like rent could be under 2 but buying would be more)

The OP should get a decent apartment in the Boat club area with that budget, I am quite sure.

The pool and gym? Walk to the Park Sheraton and use it, would be my advice.

There is a boat club there, too, have no idea about its facilities.

The Boat Club Boat Club (Madras Boat Club?) costs lakhs to join, I think --- but if it could be put down as a business expense?

I should have guessed. No great shakes, have been there briefly and once, but in a swanky area.

Annual membership at the Park Sheraton will be much cheaper.

Still don't get it: that's nearly 4000 Euros /month and I can't find a modern well-equipped apartment ... I've seen a few around there , dirty, poor kitchen , etc .. and apart from the fact that the area is "quiet" ,not sure of any other selling points ...

Do ppl in Chennai understand what you can get for this amount of money in a Western city ?

I don't want to get a house out of the city as I don't want to spend 2 hrs a day in traffic and I want a few relatively close neighbours if that's possible ..

keep me posted if you hear of anything, thx

Even for Chennai those prices are really high! Some of my friends (also expats) have found an apartment on St. Mary's Road (almost next to Park Sheraton) for Rs. 80.000 a month. Not sure whether they have a pool and a gym though... And to be honest, I think in that part of town there are not so many of those big complexes with swimming pools.

Boat Club is nice, but you're right, it costs a few lakh to become a member. There is also an option of becoming a rowing member, then it only costs about Rs. 25.000, but that means doing 100 rowing outings. It might be that you need a recommendation to become a member as well, but they might have a special arrangement for expats.

The problem with Indian real-estate is that it is not an organized sector so people think they can make a quick buck if they can scam someone. What methods have you used to search for an apartment? 2.5 Lakhs should get you the best accommodation in Chennai. If you have exhausted all your resources and willing to pay a fee you can contact Global Adjustments http://www.globaladjustments.com/ they should defiantly find you a good apartment. My advice when you look for an apartment don’t mention your budget, just mention all your requirements, if you mention your budget people will scam you by providing what they have and ignore your requirements.

Sample list from their site http://www.globaladjustments.com/?q=node/747

Checkout the houses for rent by this company http://www.primelocator.in/search-properties.php

Just curious to know about the company name that is willing to pay 4000 Euros, can you share or is that confidential?
