Gujarati, Rajasthani & Bengali food
Mansukh's at #10 Ramasamy St, T Nagar (4212-7975) has great Gujarati thali and a Rajasthani thali (special Sunday thali, too). If you are there between 4-7 you can order from the menu downstairs. Their stuffed paratha with a side of yogurt is so thick it's a meal unto itself. The pepper (black pepper) paneer is great and the malai lassi excellent. You can buy dokhla (and kandvi in the morning) to take home. (It's a steamed lentil cake--looks like cornbread).
Gujurati Mandu is up north on Broadway. Great Sunday Thali, but it's not as nice inside. 2435-1258. The Rangoli thali (Gujurati) at Saravanna Bhavan in Mylapore was disappointing. Shri Murthai snack place in Spencer Plaza also has dokhla, including a layered one with chutney and sliced paneer. They also have kandvi if you get there before it is sold out. Bengali--Annapurna, at 23 Pantheon Road in Egmore. 2852-3037. The fish steamed in banana leaf was great. No sandesh or other sweets. It's a small place so you may have to wait for a table. |

In Kilpauk/Vadapalani
Thali Corner has Rajasthani & Gujurati thali. Sundays are crowded, so prepare to sit on the balcony and wait. The food was good (half the dishes are Gujurati, half Rajasthani), but at 175 Rs. (since when is gulab jamun so special?), I still think Mansuk's & Sri Gujarathi Mandal (Broadway) are better.
Address: WIndsor Palace Bldg 33/13 Balfour Rd. (branches off of Kilpauk Garden Rd.) I have been to Mansukh a couple of times.. its just a 5 min walk from my parents' place... Fantastic food.. Atleast back in 2005!
Only drawback with gujrati/rajasthani restaurants is you almost never get beer there.. or any other alcohol for that matter! |
