Gujarati community in Chennai
Gujarati community in Chennai
Hello -
I am moving to Chennai at the end of October from the US. I'm Jain and Gujarati. Is the a sizeable Jain/Gujarati community in Chennai? And does any know how to get in contact with the Gujarati Samaj (if there is one). I figure if there's a Gujarati community in Raleigh, NC -- there's got to be a huge one in Chennai.
I'm asking these questions because when I move there (for work) I will not know anyone in Chennai. Plus most of my family is now in the US.
Thanks

There will be a sizeable Jain/Gujarati community in any major city in India, Chennai included.

chennai got a quite a big gujarati community...........i guess most of them stay arnd the area Sowcarpet..........
Amazing!
I was going to tentatively suggest the George Town (Parry's) area, and glad to know I wouldn't have been far wrong, but accurate info has come from others
There is one Jain temple that I know of in Kutchery Road, Mylapore, and I also know that many of the lighting shops in Teynampet (Anna Salai) are run by Jain families)
By the way... I love the idea that sowcarpet might be pronounced sow carpet, as if it was English, but sadly it isn't; it is pronounced sowca-pet.
Not-so-far-off Old Washermanpet, however, is said as one would expect

As earlier posters have already replied there are plenty of Jain Gujaratis & Marwaris leaving in Chennai. There are plenty of Jain temples in Chennai.
Vepery area is also where lots of Jain stay. There is one building called Vaibhav Apartment where one of my relative stays. It's next to Jain temple.
Ronak.
