Hello Yaxha, Welcome to IndiaMike
![]() Don't worry about the English; this is a multi-national board and English is not the first language of many of our members. If we're not sure what you mean we'll ask! Please check out some of the other threads in this section, you'll find that a lot of your questions are answered already, and more information will be there too. Education for a non-English-speaking 10-year old might be a bit of a challenge: I suspect that all the international schools here are English-based. But there are parents among our members, so lets see if anyone can suggest anything.

But seriously, even the best 'local' schools are 'English Medium' schools. |

I was thinking the same: Learning both English and Tamil (extremely difficult on Westerners though I hear) or Hindi or whatever may be current in school, if at all necessary, shouldn't be all that hard at her age. It will be if you throw her in the deep end though, so the sooner you can start on it the better, of course. Her not having been accustomed to speaking foreign languages before (I presume, and the way I know Spain) will be a drawback, but she'll have to learn anyway, and she's still young. Madrid will have plenty of tutors and schools, for English at least. Consider taking classes together, would be both fun and practical, and a good motivation.
Even just a few words to get her going when you get there & not feel totally alienated from her playmates let alone the school system will make a world of difference, I'm speaking from experience.

My daughter speaks just a few english at home , me and my wife have always tried to teach her, however like many families we donīt have enough time so From my own point of view this change will turn her world into a new one. I visited Chennai five years ago for one month, i love the india culture although I am complety sure that settle our home in India can be hard especially for her. what sort of things can do a family in Chennai at weekend? At first impression India can look too dusty but I have a good idea of indians and her way of living? My daughter ask me; is India a safety country? how the indian children have a good time? Thanks again |

How Indian children have a good time depends very much on the income bracket of their parents.
You will see children using old tyres as hoops and spinning wooden tops --- the richer ones that you don't see will be sitting in front of their X-boxes, or whatever the latest technology is! Yes... it can be incredibly dusty here. As for family weekends... well, I guess you can do similar stuff to whatever you do in your own country! PLUS all the new things. And, for quite a while, even walking along a Chennai street will be a new thing ![]() I think Chennai has changed quite a lot in five years. But you'll see... |

Hi Yaxha
Welcome to Chennai. Don't worry too much as metropolitans in India are becoming fairly advanced so as to accommodate foreigners. You will find that chennai offers excellent academic choices and chennaites are friendly. It has very good hospitals providing world class treatment. Although chennai has people from economic brackets, you can find accommodation in a place that you are fairly comfortable with. If you are going to work in IT corridor, there are lots of apartments available. You can find good apartments in other places as well. If I can be of any help, contact me at prasadha@gmail.com Regards Prasad |
