Gated community in Chennai?

Hey there

I have just signed up to move with my wife and three kids from Japan to Chennai later this year.I did spend a couple of days there back in March and had a look-see. At the time, most of the places I saw were independent houses. Are there any communities with shared facilities and houses that are reasonably close to central Chennai (by reasonably close I would be happy to be down on ECR or OMR). Even better still if anyone knows anywhere that has a decent share of Japanese expats living there. (my wife is Japanese). Any help hugely appreciated.

Isn't "gated community" an oxymoron?

But I see advertisments for apartments in blocks that have such stuff, so I suppose they must exist.

Sorry, I have no idea about any Japanese community. I know we have a couple of Japanese restaurants, and that might be a good place to start. I've never tried them, as I easily get hooked on sushi and sashimi, and it is an addiction I can't afford.

Welcome to Chennai. I think you may find a few Japanese communities on the GST road toward "Oragadam". But its too far away from the city and there are better options within. If your work place is going to be somewhere on OMR (Chennai South) there are pretty decent places to check out. But the overall infrastructure is not yet developed; so there would be stretches of good roads and no garbage followed by potholes and stench!

You should be able to find a good gated area to live in though - plenty of those have come up.

Nick, may I ask what is the policy on advertising rentals? I recently moved to Bangalore from Chennai and my flat is vacant but not sure if its permissible in this forum. Thanks for your advice

Gated communities are available more in areas like Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, ECR which again will not help you to commute back to work or school.

A typical gated community should have school, Mall, amphi theater etc etc, today those things are missing except for a few very costly ones.

Advertising of any kind is completely banned. This includes "small ads" such as flat for rent, bicycle for sale, and so on.

From the time when I was on the IM team, I can say that the site has, in the past, allowed such stuff and it always gets abused and becomes a nightmare for the moderators. So the answer is, sorry, but it is not allowed.
