Future Newbies to Chennai

My boyfriend and I are moving to Chennai in July 2009 to teach at the AISC. We are starting the process with the school now and would like all the advice possible! The school provides us with an apartment, but they asked if we would like to live near the school or center city. Since we have no idea of either locations...which would be better?
Also, we both are currently living/teaching in South America and will be back in the states for the holidays. We would like to start purchasing items to bring with us in July (so we aren't buying everything at once). Are there specific items that we should bring with us? Towels? Linens?
I am sure we will be asking more questions as the move gets closer and appreciate all input! Thank you.

My husband and I moved here from Thailand about 6 weeks ago. I really wish I had brought clothes hangers--we shipped stuff by sea, so we could have brought them...clothes hangers here are fiendishly expensive, my guess is that the average Chennai resident folds his/her clothes instead of hanging them up in a wardrobe.

Other than that, most things we need/want are available here, although some might be more expensive than in the US. Are you moving with suitcases only, or are you sending some things via seafreight? That would make a difference to what I would suggest bringing.

Hi Rosl,

Congratulations! I'll be moving this summer and working at AISC too. Shoot me a private email and maybe we can help each other out.

I am relocating to Chennai with my family, need some assistance regarding Visa. We are german Nationals, however i was born in India and lived in Mumbai for some years before I left India. Hello Abu, and welcome.

Do check with the Indian immigration sites (sorry, not time to give you a link just now as rushing out) but as far as I know you can work or study freely in India under a OCI. In fact I'm sure of it, because I can under PIO
