Freight charges to Chennai from Texas
Hi All,
We are planning to move back to Chennai in a few months. I have a lot of furniture and equipment which i want to take with me. I am thinking of taking a 40 feet container. Does anyone know how much it will cost ? Any details like customs, packing, insurance etc would be good. Regards Ahmed |

I returned from California to UK a couple of years ago, following a 3 year assignment. A 40ft container cost me (OK my company!) 2000 USD including packing, insurance, customs, and door to door pickup and delivery. The whole thing took just under 3 weeks.
I would not expect the rates to be greatly different to other countries, but your best bet would be to contact your local shipping agent (Allied-Pickfords, for instance).

I was quoted 4k for a 20 foot container by sky2c. The air7seas might not be too far behind. Based on that it looks like atleast 10 k cost for you for a 40 foot container

My experience shipping from UK was that the sea-freight cost is more or less constant. What makes a huge difference to the end price is the services each end.
There is a big difference in the amount of padding and quality of packing used by the top-end removers. It matters if you have a lot of antique furniture etc. My packers were mid-budget, did a good and careful job, and the job was co-ordinated by a company in Chennai who also did all the billing.

you can check rates online with reputed carriers like maersk http://www.maersk.com/en but these rates are from port to port.
Do not underestimate the logistics of transporting a 40' container from the dock to your door. The roads in India are narrow, plus one has to deal with electrical poles, overhead cables etc. Consider using 2X 20' containers. You may want to consider using a relocation service (like http://www.gmacglobalrelocation.com/) who will handle door to door, packing loading and unloading. But it will be more expensive. Customs rates are determined by your friendly customs officer, who will interpret some vague customs guidelines and assess the import duty at the port of entry. Duties are significanty less if you entering India on a Transfer of Residence (TR) http://www.geocities.com/indiancusto...agerule/tr.htm http://mumbaicustoms3.gov.in/htmldocs/tr.htm |

Here is a rate quote of $5,825 from Maersk for a 40' container from Los Angeles to Chennai . I hope the breakdown of charges will help you ask the right questions when you receive other quotes. I recommend maersk as I have used them before. They own and operate the containers and the ships and offer online tracking. Their shipments were generally much faster too. click to enlarge

Here's the quote i received from sky2c. They seemed good. I was informed that I wont need a 40' container. But 20' container wont do. Maybe I can try to get the container shared. Door to door for 40’ container : $4500 Packing : 1000$ Plus 12% tax. I have sent my list to maersk. |

ahmed, so keep in mind that its almost impossible transporting 40' containers on Indian roads. go for 2 (or 1.5) 20'. even idf it is more expensive, you may save yourself the trouble of having to unload the container's contents at the destination port and reloading on trucks, only to unload them again at home.
