Education costs?
Hi all,
Not sure where to put this one... I need to know a little bit about education and costs in Chennai. Is there a standard fee for government schools or does it vary? What kind of money are we talking for 12 months enrollment in a government school? Also, what's the average age children start school here? Thanks, Gertie |

Thanks for your reply epicure.
I need to clarify that I'm not asking for me - I don't have children. I am contributing towards the education costs of a child I know who doesn't go to school because her parents are unable to pay. She is 4 years old. Gertie |

A govt. school fee would be very less.. not more than $10 per month but most of them are in pathetic state. You might wanna try to find a central school for the child. The cost will be more or less the same but the quality will be hugely improved.

Not sure of the difference (administrative) but, central schools are mostly co-ed. Some are even english-medium. Their results are much better than the govt. schools. Maybe somebody else can tell us the administrative differences.

well the difference is in the management..There are kendriya Vidyalayas (Central Schools), and other sorts of schools..
but in any of the government OR government aided schools the fee should exceed US $30 a year.. |

Thanks for the heads up phantom, I will look into it. A better education for around the same price sounds good.

central school like kendriya vidyalaya has CBSE (central board of secondary education)syllabus, uniform thru' out india irrespective of in which state it is located. Other government schools are state-run and the syllabus vary from state to state as it is under state government administration. Also,in most state-run government schools, medium of instruction is in their regional language, in your case as you are enquiring about chennai, medium of instruction is tamil (language). There could be state-run government schools where in the medium of instruction is in both regional language (tamil in your case) and english. Usually the admission starts from may and go up to june end and in rare cases upto july. You need to check this with respective schools. The fee structure would be very less as these schools are funded by state/central governments |

Mrs N has experience of this sort of thing, not only as a mother of two, now grown up, but she has worked for a school and has contacts. She also does a certain amount of such charitable work, both in her own right and as a go-between.
It'd be good to meet up before you leave here, but do feel free to come over (or we'll meet up somewhere) and chat with Mrs N.

Thanks all for your help. I've been to the school the parents chose, checked it out and paid the fee directly. The little girl had her first day yesterday and you've never seen such an excited kid!
Its a good feeling. Gertie |

Yes, but...
One of our building workers explained; I have a boy and a girl. I will give the girl a better education, as the boy, if he turns out to be no good at school, can learn my trade. He has now found a sponsor for both of them ![]() ------------------ Teach a man to fish and you give him a way of spending whole weekends away from his family. ![]() |
