EarthSync festival Sat. evening
Shye Ben-Tzur is an acclaimed Israeli composer, producer
and performer based in North India for the past decade, playing Rajasthani rhythms with Western sounds. He is a Hebrew Qawwali singer, and is widely known as the ‘Hebrew Sufi’. From his personal life experiences Ben-Tzur has succeeded to bring his own ancient culture alive into a unique cross cultural work. Besides working with the Qawwal communities across India, in the past few years Shye has also been collaborating with different folk musicians from the Rajasthan desert. This was a clear example of how music and art crosses political and religious boundaries, giving credence to the festival’s ambitions.” (Songlines Magazine review from Shye’s performance at the Jaipur Literature Festival 2009). For the EarthSync Festival 2009, Shye Ben-Tzur is coming to Chennai with his amazing group of Rajasthani vocalists and percussionists, but the show will also feature an excellent flamenco and oriental guitarist from Spain, a superb female vocalist, a 3-piece Rajasthani Brass Band as well as bass and drums. Shye Ben-Tzur – Shoshan will be releasing on EarthSync later this year. C O M Special Show – Kartick & Gotam A collaboration between a music producer and sound designer - Patrick Sebag and Yotam Agam - who have re-mixed EarthSync's folk recordings and musicians to create an alternative, electronic album and live show. Kartick & Gotam collaborate with various music and dance artists, and integrate samples from around Asia and the Middle East with contemporary electronic sound. A unique ear for blending the intriguing local music from around the world which they encounter on their neverending travels with up-and-coming electronic beats distinguishes Kartick & Gotam from the shallow musical mainstream, and propels their exceptional downtempo grooves into a league with Thievery Corporation, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Fila Brazilia, Massive Attack, Cheb I Sabbah, Karsh Kale and Talvin Singh. Glad you enjoyed it, altho' I liked Shye with the Rajasthani musicians better. The singers' voices were outstanding, the arrangements exciting and the mix of styles fascinating. We paid only 400 Rs. to see them--someday, when they play in NY, it will be $30!

well what we thought was shye was better at flute than vocals! but yes extreme left rajasthani singer (always used to finish the song with good alaaps) had extremely strong and good voice! Though a pity they didn't have a proper quawalli but only quawaali type music as was mentioned on facebook, but evening in itself was quite fun!
