PS: Since you are anonymous anyway, what does "paid very well" mean in terms of numbers? I have no ideas of Indian wages.

Another question that comes to my mind may sound strange: are Indians xenophobic? I mean, they would probably not let us know (except for those trying to rip us off), but what do they think of foreigners coming to that already overpopulated country and earning so much more than most Indians? I would not want to live in a place if I knew I was not welcome by the majority of locals.

No, you won't find any mass demonstrations outside your house. Placards saying Go Home Blowball and such like!

In that we are talking about Chennai, I have always found it to be a friendly and accommodating city with more smiles than frowns.

I guess you might be mistaken when you say that you are getting paid much more than Indians...

you might be getting a good package..that you never what the other person in the same position in a different person is getting..

If you can give me a figues..Annual USD of INR.. I can tell you what is you status in India..

It sounds like someone has been telling you about Mumbai!

I was in Beijing for about 4 days, so perhaps I only got a superficial impression of it. But the air pollution was terrible, no-one outside the hotel spoke any english (honestly, not even hello/goodbye!) and there was nothing happening there, the shops close and there are few restaurants and no bars. None of these things are true of Chennai, the air pollution is no worse than any other city with 7 million or so people, most people will speak at least some english, and the shops are open relatively late, there are lots of good restaurants and bars if you know where to look too!

You see plenty of blue sky, although the last couple of days have been overcast, but the beaches are filthy, you will have to go well away from the city to find good beaches.

Hello,
My starting salary would be around 500k INR or 12.3k USD plus one paid flight home per year. By Bangalore standards it may not be much, but most Indians still live in poverty, so I guess in their view it sure would be a lot.
Bye

Oh..dont want to put you down..but dont worry thats not a huge number by Indian standards...thats a Middle class wage range..

well in most your tenure in India, apart from tourism, you would be staying in Big cities only..like major Metros..

OR maybe few chances of you staying in a B center like..Jaipur, Chandigarh etc..

If we do not talk about people who are not educated, this is pretty ok package..

Well, middle class, that's what I am
Is that Indian English you speak? I find it a bit difficult to understand what you mean, frankly Especially your last sentence ...

Plus, I am not worried about what well-off Indians with a good job in one of the major cities think of me, I am talking about the large proportion of Indians who hardly manage to survive, such as farmers killing themselves with despair, untouchables etc.

Don't worry. The vast majority will never know of your existence. To some you will be a genuine source of business and income (do support your local small businesses) and maybe even employment. To others, you are another one added to those who might, if they are lucky, give them a few rupees to help out.

If the Indian poor had a seething resentment against the well off, local or foreign, there would be a revolution.

You Can live well, with that kind of money in banglore...maybe even better than the standard u are living now..but it all come down to you ..how u spend that money..India is a place where u can find thing at all different prices n you should be able to find places accordingly to what u can afford....
As an example: i remember i could spend Rs 10 sometime on my dinner and also Rs 500 rs in different place.
What i think can make you stay good or bad in india depends largely on how fussy u r. Person With lot of patience can cross lots of indian problem with ease and can still enjoy the positive it offers.

Thanks for any info you can provide!
If you list your priorities and then make a list that says I cannot live without the following then we can provide more focused answers. BTW can you share with us in what field your husband is working?
