City Center?
I have a few Indian contacts who are helping me orientate myself with the city before I even arrive but as a point of reference I would like to ask.....
Where is the city center? How far out will I be if I am 'in the suburbs'? Thanks |

It will help if you specify which city you are talking about...

Since it's on the "Moving to Chennai" sub-forum this might tell you something guys...
(I know I have trouble looking at the exact forum locations and it would be very helpful if people would just specify in their questions what they're after.) *cross-posted with OP relevant point though

Hey Guys! I wondered too, but the forum topic makes it clear.
Or as clear as it can be... it is a bit hard to say where Chennai 'city centre' is --- it kind-of has several! maeha... what are you looking for? shopping centre? touristy stuff? cultural stuff? If you are coming here to work it would be helpful to know where you work place is... Where do you friends live? |

How far is 10 minutes?
Its not that I'm looking for anything specific. I just used the term 'city center' to establish how far out some of the location were.
I have 3 locations that I have still not been able to locate on the map, Chinmaya Nagar, Kilpauk, Thiruvanmiyur, although all have been described as being only 10 minutes from the city center. Maybe less confusing if I wait until I get there? Thanks |

hmm.. no chennai expert, but like nick mentioned, there may not be a single "city center" to point out. Quite a large area can be defined as downtown area. Tiruvanmiyur, may be many km from the Chennai central station for example, but you dont miss much there. Most of the larger Indian cities have a number of mini "center"s.

Hi
As has been explained, a fairly large area can be considered City Centre (especially by the real estate guys), typically it is Mount Road between Gemini Flyover and GPO. Of the 3 places you have mentioned, Chinmaya Nagar is a little bit off. It is behind / beyond Vadapalani but even this is only 6-7 kms from gemini. Kilpauk is a fairly central place, <4 KMs from central railway station. Thiruvanmiyur is in the south east coast, almost the boundary of city limit but it is a well developed locality with all facilities. HTH Slakhs |

What map have you got?
If you can get yourself one of these it will be really useful, both in the planning and when you get here. I wouldn't call any of the places you mention 'central'. Thiruvanmyur is the only place you mention that I know. It is a pleasant area, quite livable in. It is a 'centre' in itself, with a big temple and quite a lot of culture. Unfortunately it also has a traffic jam. Most people would think it a little far South. I'm about to move to a place even further South! |

hmm....I understood the "city center" question perfectly!
Coming from a "small" town (but size is relative..especially when you compare to Indian cities)...I also wondered where the city center is. That is..that well defined area where most commercial and cultural activity is taking place and where you...aaa..."go out".Chennai of course is too big and puzzle-like to have such a thing, so there will be several areas which are well-developed commercially and otherwise, which you can sort of call "city centers". I can only tell you about Kilpauk (Kilpauk Garden), which is near Anna Nagar, North-West area of Chennai (maybe you will find that on the maps..there are so many maps online too). It's indeed reasonably close (around 15 minutes by rikshaw) to one of the main shopping areas, which you can define as a city center (Nungambakam shopping area, Spencer's Plaza, Satyam Cinema complex, Landmark). |
