Chennai: milk, beef?

Okay I have tried the nestle milk and am not very fond of it. We have tried the Amul butter and ice cream and found them to be great. Has anyone tried the Amul milk sold in the plastic bags? It states it is pasturized. Can it be found in Chennai? I saw it on the website that it is available. Thanks!

Also, any good places for beef that has been imported?

Several makes of milk are available in half-litre plastic bags at any food shops. Easy to find.

Many people advise boiling it, even though it is pasteurised, so I'd better pass on that caution. I don't bother.

milk

Thanks, so let me understand this you buy the milk but don't boil it? It seems like that is not necessary if it is pastuerized. There ice cream and butter is great so surely there milk is fine.

By the way I haven't even seen one snake! I was sure I would be struck by one by now. Have been here 2 1/2 weeks and am really enjoying so far.

Any tips on beef...good beef?

I am an Indian and this is what I do.....
1. for UHT milk - the ones available in cardboard cartons...Nestle, amul.... dont boil it. buy it, open it, drink a protion, store the rest of thecarton in fridge... and finish it within 3 days

2. for any other milk - plastic packet or bottle or bought/delivered by local milkman - we always boil it.

better boil the milk even if it is pasteurised. With respect to snakes i dont think you can find any in the big indian cities. The snakes are homeless as the ecological erosion gets worse. Well you have to look for it in the countryside (i wouldnt do that)

I don't drink much cold milk, mostly in tea, so it is boiled (Chai, Indian-style tea).

When I do, as in cereals, no I don't bother to boil it. Most Indian people, including my wife, tell me off about this, and say that the pasteurising is not to be 100% trusted, and the milk may not have been stored at the right temperatures, etc etc.

It is sensible advice. I guess

I dont drink much milk, but when the urge strikes me, the stuff in bags from the shop accross the road does fine. Ive never bothered to boil it.

I dont know if you will find any imported beef for sale, its not a big seller around here. Id like to know if you find some though!

m_v, you are right in the middle of a Big Brahmin area, but if you go to a muslim area you will find local beef available.

You will also find Turkey, Rabbit meat in the Muslim area.
If I lived bang in the middle of a Brahmin locality in Chennai I wouldn't let it be known that I am cooking & eating beef.

Thats probably good advice. I will just have to hold out until I go back home in a couple of months.

For details on beef, pickup a Chennai Yellowpages book and start making calls to the business listed in their directory.

You would normally find good beef in some of these cold storage shops but if you are looking for tinned beef you would need to check out in Nilgiris or Spencer's retail outlets

I second the advice on the milk bit.

Beef will always be a bit difficult to find. You could always go to a 5 star once in a while and have enough to last you for a while and then go back again, but being able to purchase it locally is going to be difficult.

Even in Delhi the top butchers do not keep it, its a ticking time bomb quite frankly, 99% restaurants will not serve it with the exception of the 5 stars.

The only place i found it being sold openly was in Pune..

beef kebabs/other preparations are openly sold in muslim localities all over india, usually from barrows or hole in the wall shops. but maybe you are right about pune being the only place where uncooked beef is sold. but even that may be available in hardcore muslim localities.

In that sense you would find enough behind new friends colony as well...but the question is whether you would risk buying it from a "hole in the wall"..... i dont think i would...
