Chennai: lawn furniture?
Can anyone direct me to a good place to buy lawn furniture? I saw some at Lifestyles and it was quite pricey.
Thanks! Last edited by machadinha : Mar 8th, 2008 at 23:20. Reason: adjusted title |

You can find wicker furniture at various small places on the East Coast Road, South of Thiruvanmyur, which might be useful. The steel stuff I don't know.
Relatively cheap plastic also available, but I have my doubts about leaving it out in the sun.

Thanks Nick, I was looking for some treated wood furniture that I could leave pool side or outside. We could go wicker for a covered area but would prefer wooden.
By the way, haven't seen any snakes yet. All that worrying for nothing! I am enjoying Chennai very much ![]() |

Very unfriendly climate for wooden garden furniture! I think it would have to be expensive teak and oiled very regularly.
I had been thinking about getting some wicker stuff, on the basis that it might outlast plastic, for garden and terrace. I don't know, though, just a theory. Glad you're enjoying Chennai... lawn? poolside? sounds like you've got a nice place What district are you in?Snakes? Maybe in the summer, the more central you are, the less likely. I'd advise against bare feet or toes in the garden at night, just in case. |

Can you not get anything like Ronseal weather protect stuff for wooden furniture in India ?
My wooden bench has been in my garden for 2 years. Gave it a lick of ronseal and it is still like brand new. |

Ahh, but if you get 12 hours blistering sunshine on your garden furniture almost every day, then please tell me where in UK you are! ---although the British winters, with wet and frost, also do a lot of harm to wood, I have to admit.
I'd guess wood oil must be available; certainly sealants and polishes and varnishes are. |

But you could put the furniture under a tree so it is in the shade.
My bench is south facing an the metal legs get very hot in when we have sunshine. But the ronseal treated wood is still like new. The original stain they used on the bench was poor and deteriorated like no ones business so I rubbed it down and gave it 2 coats of ronseal. The ronseal all weather stuff is very tough. |

Well, I will have to give them some thought. We brought some furniture with us. Perhaps we need to get a wicker set and just keep in on the covered porch. Nick, we are very spoiled with beautiful home off ECR just the southern part of Injammbakkum. I must say we live in a "bubble" but I do enjoy getting out and seeing India. Any tips on finding a good deal on wicker?
Thanks! |

I saw some of the all-weather wicker-look plastic outdoor furniture at Teak Heirlooms in Nungumbakkum. I didn't look at the prices though. They also had solid teak outdoor furniture - bars, stools, lawn chairs....
We bought cane outdoor furniture about 6 months ago and it is disgusting now. My sister, the USDA fungal expert, says that if I bleached it, it would go away for a while but that in this climate, wicker furniture is going to mildew quickly. She said the surest way to slow down the mildew was to set the furniture in the sun (ours is in the shade). The pool furniture that came with the house - fairly uncomfortable painted wooden chairs - is looking fine though. Dh, the ex-sailor, says that if you buy marine products made for teak decks, and keep up on the maintenance, then the stuff will last a lifetime, and look beautiful to boot. You'll need some deckhands, though. ![]() |

Don't they deal in rattan wares there? Perfect for an outdoors tropical climate, I believe.

not sure about rattan.
Keeping the wicker in the sun sounds like a good idea. Then maybe it'll only go mouldy in November. That's disapointing news, by the way, as I'd been thinking of buying some. Only thinking --- so no, no hints on the deals. Anything in Nungambakam is likely to be expensive --- but if it lasts maybe its worth it. Actually, although that it is true that it is a trendy and expensive area to shop, our stained glass came from a guy with a studio there, and it was not too expensive, which is not at all relevant .We're on the canal side of Palavakkam, to the North of you, gkj. Yes, some lovely houses on the sea side all the way down here. Marine-quality teak, Yes (also an ex-sailor), that would be good. I don't know if it can be had, even though India grows the stuff. |

The Teak Heirloom is just exactly what I am looking for. I do wonder how expensive they are. Any other places out there to find wooden furniture?

Yes... there are a couple of places on the East Coast Road. One smallish place I've been in, was interior furniture only I think, but they'll likely make what you want.
