Chennai Nightlife

"Is there a nightlife?! Or afternoon life? Or anything... "

Chennai has a quite a few good places to hangout in the night; nightlife is not very popular because only a few people can afford to spend money. Check out the links for info on Chennai nightlife

ISN,

Thank you! Those links are brilliant.

I am flying to Chennai this afternoon to have a look around. Fingers crossed it goes well and I will get to one of the bars you mentioned for a celebratory beer.

Cheers,
G1

I my humble opinion Chennai is quite horrible: very polluted, crowded, dirty, narrow-minded, and what not. Perhaps it's because, unlike Nick, I don't hate the place where I came from ...and that was far from being a crowded place. I'm also not comparing it with other Indian big cities, I have only briefly passed through Mumbai & Bangalore, apart from living for a short while in the peaceful Bubhaneshwar.

Although you probably have most of your answers by now, here is my bit:
-nightlife: not much at all, and only in 5 star hotels; there are a few "independent" bars also, like Zara. Haven't been able to enter into any so far (not that I've tried hard anyway), these people have hilarious dress-codes, as if you're going to a ball or something.
-sports: this is available, running, swiming, gyms, even golf clubs
-books: not aware of book clubs, but in terms of bookstores the city os great (I'm a Landmark fan);
-photography: I have seen several ads, as I was interested myself, so you won't have any trouble finding one;
-snakes: been here for 1 and a half years, haven't spotted any.

Curious how you'll find the city...after so many different opinions here

I don't hate the place that I came from at all: I'd go back to visit often if I had the money. Well, often in the elusive British hot weather.

But I did a sort of comparison, and chose to live here.

<Smell>Unbelievable! Nobody mentioned smell of ripe jackfruit! IMHO THE smell of Chennai. You hate it or love it(PLEASE do not tell me that Chennai has changed so much that there is no such smell).

...well, not just at the moment, but hopefully there will be again when the season starts. Can't remember when that is...

Then, come the summer, there will be the smell of rip mangoes

What is a good smell? what is a bad smell? It all just depends on how we learned.
The pure air is odourless. is anything deviating from that, a bad smell? If smell of a particular food generates some good emotions in me, i call it a good smell. If the smell of the rivers in chennai generates a good emotion in me(yes it will do sometime ha ha..) it is a good smell for me. ha ha...
