Bringing my puppy

Hello everyone, We are finally set to move to Chennai next week from Prague. And we are bringing our small dog with us. This is our first time to travel with our pet and we are not quite sure what would be the immigration police (in India) will ask us regarding our pet. We have already prepare all the necessary papers/vaccinations with stamp here in Prague. We are just worried that if we are already arrive in India. That they might ask us something that we didnt have.

Does anyone who have the same experience bringing their pet in India? If so, how does it goes in the airport policies in India about bringing pet?

Thank you in Advance!

I can tell you a good vet here.

(despite the fact that she is in the embarrassing position of having had one of my cats escape from her clinic).

She is a very caring person, and gives all animals, dogs, cats, birds, good attention.

Hope everything goes fine when we arrive in Chennai. No more quarrantine etc..

Make sure you have your recent proof of Rabies vaccination just in case. People have said they don't check but I would be careful..

As Puchoo suggests check out the threads on the Dogs, Cats and Langurs forum: http://www.indiamike.com/india/dogs-...-langurs-f109/

There are several threads on moving with pets and how to live with them once you arrive in India.

I would also suggest you make several copies of all the paperwork related to your dog so you can leave these with customs when they ask for it.

Make sure your dog has a collar with your contact details. And paste a paper with the dogs name, age and contact details on the cage. There have been instances of dogs escaping on airports and animal cages being put on the wrong plane.

It also makes sense to have the contact number of one of the animal welfare organisations in Chennai at hand just in case you need assistance. I believe the Green Cross in good in Chennai.

Lastly, I am happy to read your dog is already vaccinated but please if it is not yet sterilized, do not let it breed in India. India has already have more dogs than it can take care of.

For example, at the moment I have three pups for who we try to find homes (see attached). Two of these were dumped in a bag in the jungle. There were three but by the time we found them, one had died and two were full of maggots eating them away (you can still see the damage clearly on the back of the black and white one) . They do much better now. Still they are lucky because we will get them good homes but so many dogs in India are not simply because there are too many.

I am so happy to hear that your pup is fixed already. I hope she will like India.

I guess you know that if she is less than 5 kilo you may be able to keep her with you in the cabin.

Hello Billyshake, Tyn church is indeed my favorite here in Prague. We live only next to the old town square in parizska. And I would say, yes it is very beautiful and romantic place..But for us, its time to move.

Thank you for your welcome! :-)

I just want to give you fair warning about leaving India with your pet. Our previous tenants left their cat with us for what was to be 5 days (waiting for blood analysis report) and it turned into 7 weeks. They were either going to move back to the UK or Dubai, & the UK would only accept blood analysis done by European labs, which was of course, quite expensive. Then tons of paperwork, miscommunication, fees, etc., and a local pre-paid shipping agent that began refusing to do what he'd been paid to do by the owners...

Indian immigration don't give a damn about incoming dogs. you'll see a bunch of stray dogs hanging out in the streets the moment you leave the airport. If you plan to take him/her back, find out what the regulations are in the country you are returning to. UK for example has strict quarantine laws.

It sounds like your tenants were a bit unlucky. Our experience is generally not bad. But there is indeed some of work involved. Best is to arrange matters yourself. Most shipping agents will say they know but do not have a clue.

For the European side
Those who want to take animals back to Europe may want to contact Stichting Aai. This organisation can help to bring animals to Europe. They even offer solutions for the UK. They have lots of experience. We have moved many animals from India to Europe with them. Their advice is free but of course donations are welcome. You can contact them on: www.stichtingaai.nl

For the Indian side
We are working with a travel agent in Goa which is trying to specialise in assisting clients with transporting animals. Their email is: travelbargoa@yahoo.co.uk Ask for Angeline.

Beforehand, check with the airline what all you need. They tend to be well informed but you need to get the right person (who goes by different titles depending on the airline but if you ask for the cargo manager you normally get to the right one). Check several times to make sure you got the complete story. Phone them a week before you travel to confirm everything. Phone them the day before you travel to reconfirm and ask for a contact name at the airport. Airlines which put information about traveling with pets on their website tend to be best prepared.

As for the paperwork, for dog and cats you need a rabies free certificate which can take time. About two months before you go you give your animal a rabies shot, ten days later you take a blood sample and send it to the laboratory which will take from 2 weeks to 1 month to return it with the certificate.

This whole process can be shortened, for more information on this contact Stichting Aai.

When you finally go make sure you take all paperwork, including vaccination records, and keep copies of everything ready.

Same in Goa. It happens quite frequently that a foreigner finds a stray puppy/kitten and wants to take it home but do not inform themselves (at all). They turn up on the airport with the pup to go home and at the check-in counter are told they can't take it. Most of these puppies are than left outside the airport on the street. Apparently some airlines tell the passengers that some shelter will pick them up from outside the airport but that is nonsense so the poor creatures just sitting there, slowly starving, if they are lucky they get run over by a car.

We just finally arrived here in Chennai. Had a very smooth flight with my pup. She was well behaved and slept a lot in the cabin. Her vet gave her tiny pills which we she took before the flight.. The Indian police immigration didnt ask anything about her...just we were about to go out with our luggages the custom police ask my husband if we have a local/ indian certificate of the dog. Ofcourse we didnt know about it. We have only the complete vaccinations with stamps which the indian embassy required us to do.. Anyway, at the end he still let us through and finally get out from the airport..

I guess, my pup love India..she just love our place!!
