I think it is amma naana, and it is in Chamiers Road, opposite Park Sheraton Hotel. On the corner.

From the Yellow Pages for Amma Nana: 82 New 100 Chamiers Rd - 18. This is in Alwarpet. It is listed as a Departmental Store! There are toiletries upstairs and also an area where they sell cheeses and meats.

Sorry Nick - we seem to be writing at the same time or nearly!!

On the wavelength!

It means, I think Mother Grandmother. Amma/Appa is certainly mother/father.

Do not leave your espresso machine behind! Nor your high end stereo gear, vacuum cleaner, music collection, books, and, kitchen ware like knives, crystal, and, whatever good cooking utensils you have. These are expensive in Asia and you will wind up paying much more than in Paris and not being able to find many items. And, if your company is paying, it would be criminal of you not to bring these things along.

I live in Bangkok and when I moved here, I regretted not bringing some of the things I mentioned above, especially my espresso machine. We have everything here but at twice the price because of the luxury tax on imported electronics and luxury goods. Mamma mia!!

Warning, you will miss the name quite easily, it is written in small unlit lettering a little above the shop.

It is the bigger store opposite the Park Sheraton TTK ROad/Chamiers Road crossing... there are only two stores. And it is the corner one.

True... but it actually looks like it could be the smaller of the two!

Your memory for detail is amazing, Capt!

Definitely bring the kitchen knives, and a good steel, or your choice of sharpener.

I'm in two minds about the hifi. If it's a permanent move then, of course, yes. If not, then do worry a little about what the humidity and the varying voltage will do to it.

I lived half the year a two minute walk away, for two years. That place was a daily grind, and so was a liquor shop just outside it.. now closed.

Hmmm... I bet the Park Sheraton was none too keen on having a wine shop just accross the road?

Even just the other day, Mrs N remarked on the contrast between 5-star on one side of the road, and street-food on the other.

If you are into cooking, bring your pots. Most of the western style pots here have the handles tack welded on. Good pots are difficult to find. You can get knives but am not sure of their quality. Actually, I would say that you can get most things.

You can fit out a kitchen, a house --- at a fraction of the price you would at home. It won't be the same kind of stuff though, and the more like back-home you try to make it the worse the quality is likely to be.

The way to do it here would be to stick to the traditional vessels and containers available in the local hardware shops. Have an Indian kitchen!

I'd really miss my pans, and especially my set of carbon-steel (rusts quickly, sharpens quickly, high maintenance) kitchen knives if I didn't have them. But I have lots of Indian stuff too.

Hey! I have an Indian wife, so you would expect our kitchen to be somewhat hybrid, of course.

Hello all

Thanks for all the advice, please keep it coming.

I was in Chennai last Friday, didn't have too much time to get a decent impression between meetings. Did seem quite expensive in the hotels and i guess that's where I will go out ..

Have been told not to settle for less than 3500 Euros/month for accommodation allowance, seems high, but I guess that's for the company

Anyone know prices for high speed internet , cable TV and mobile phone contract ? I need some bargaining material

thanks

With that money you can get the best possible accommodation Chennai can offer.
