Accomodations
Hello,
My company is looking to rent a 2-4 bedroom place. The budget is approximately Rs. 50,000-60,000/mo. We found a small two bedroom flat in Besant Nagar. The flat is well-kept and is in a busy part of town with a gym and stores in the area. The street itself is residential. Also, the apartment is 1 or 2 km from the beach. In contrast, we found a 4 bedroom "farm house" off of ECR Rd on the outskirts of town. The house is surrounded by a high wall and has its own caretaker. The house is roomy and also well-kept with surrounding gardens. It is 5 minutes from the beach. The main concern with the house is that it is isolated. The population density is very low in the neighborhood. It appears that there are no shops, parks or gym facilities nearby. Living there would require greater dependence on a driver (which will be provided, anyway). Amazingly, both the apartment and the house are in the same price range. My question is - are there any compromises in terms of finding a similar house closer to civilization or perhaps a nicer apartment? We've been looking for weeks and it seems like the accomodations are either really humble or really nice. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Anjum |

for that kind of money i wouldnt have thought you would have many problems finding a place! Besant Nagar is a pretty expensive area, hence why a 2 br apartment is the same price as a house further away, although ECR itself is also very pricey, it must be quite a long way out of Chennai. I dont live in that area though, so perhaps certain other members can help more.
My advice is to look further afield, try going north into mylapore/alwarpet/t.nagar there are lots of places and 60k/month will put you in the top price bracket. try www.sulekha.com, there are many places on there. If you are in Chennai then there are papers published on saturday (i forget the names) that are dedicated to real estate. |

Yes... lots of possible compromises!
And I hate those high-walled houses near the beach. Had the opportunity to buy one last year. It was a lovely house, but my reaction was ---- take me back to somewhere that has some community! Besant Nagar is a lovely area, but so are many of the places around Adyar, and, accross the river, RA Puram, Mandaveli, Abhiramapuram, Mylapore. Spend a day driving around! The paper to get, on a Saturday is The Hindu --- has a big property section, but there are small local papers too. Whilst they usual;y get delivered to the house they are often available in places like Nilgiris supermarket. My 2-bed, independent upper portion of a house, in Abhiramapuram, btw... was 6,600, though you might have to pay 10,000 now: rents have gone up with the property prices.

Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions. I may be going to see a few more apartments today. I will let you know how it turns out. By the way, the two-bedroom apartment we saw was in Adyar, not Besant Nagar (still trying to get my bearings).

Accomodations
Hello,
Went to see a couple of apartments/houses in Vellachury (sp?) and another place down ECR - very depressing. I have met a real estate agent with Equis who wants to show me some apartments in Alwarpet and other neighborhoods. Does anyone know about that company? Any thoughts? Anjum |

never heard of equis, is it a big company? I found the big companies to be not as good as the individual agents.
You should find a good place in Alwarpet, its a nice area, and its where all the cool people live If youre still having problems I can pm you some numbers of agents that I used. |
