6 months stay

Hi all!

I am going to be in Chennai for six months from mid-August to February. I'm from Canada (dad is Indian) and this is my first time in India. I am looking for as much advice as I can from this forum, hoping I can avoid as many bad experiences as I have heard about!

My first issue is housing. The places where my activities will take place are Kodambakkam and Royapettah area. Is there an area of the city you would recommend for easy access to these two areas? I am on a budget of around 21,000-25,000 per month (for rent, food, transportation and other living expenses).

I am also considering hostels and renting rooms in houses, granted I have a little privacy. Something with furniture would definitely be a plus. And somewhere where I can have Internet access with my laptop.

I have tons of other questions, but I will start with this one for now!

Which currency, Indian Rupees, Canadian Dollars or
United States Dollars, I'm sorta guessing Rupees?

Thanks for your answer, and my ammount was in Rupees (I couldn't spend 21,000$ even in a year!)

So is my budget realistic?

I aint been in Chennai since '96,'97 and was only
there for a short time anyway, so cannot offer concrete help on your specific questions, but looking around this forum there are posts that give an overview re. housing costs Chennai.

I stayed at Broadlands when i was in Chennai, 50 rps a night in a twin bed room just off the dorm, there was no wifi

I'm an American from California who just rolled into Chennai over the weekend for a 6 month stay. I'll be here until about mid-January. Name is Mike and wanted to introduce myself. The company found me an apartment at:

RA Puram (Posh, Prime Residential Area in South Chennai).
2Kms from Hotel Park Sheraton and Boat Club and Kaliappa, Billroth Hospital.

Looks like south of St. Mary's road. I'm not sure if you can call the neighborhood "posh" but relatively speaking maybe it is. Any reactions? Most people I have spoken to seem to think it's a good area.

Hey I used to live in chennai for some time now in bombay..well I never liked Chennai but I believe there are some good hang out places. I have a local friend there..u can probably reach him in case u need something his name is Mani I guess and his no is 9884006694

Hi Marjorie and thanks for the reply. I'm in town already...arrived around 2 am Sunday morning and currently staying in a hotel south of the city. I'll be moving into the apartment on Thursday. I'll send you an e-mail!
