Correct. Just... well, like getting many things moving here, it's just... time consuming

Quite correct.
More over, it's better to bring less - most are quite easy (and cheap too) to buy here. Chennai is a metro sity - so, just come to Adyar, get to Fashion Folks here (and some more such places near by, Besant Nagar) - and have some

Thanks for you're advice guys. The plan so far is to be over by mid july.

I'll try and talk my employers into getting a phone sorted for me other ways i'll just have a go at getting one myself.

I know the people in India are very nice and helpfull, (weither this is just my family trying to scare me i don't know)however how is the safety of europeans here as it is not to long since the attacks in Mumbai it is another worry for me...Thanks

Most dangerous is unsafe drinking water - unlike IBS, it can finish not only with some unpleasant feeling, but can be serious treat to your life.

Fortunately, having a safe water(and food) is quite simple in Chennai. And, if you can cook for yourself - most likely you will be able to keep (reasonable) your healthy diet - there are the plenty fresh vegetables over the year.

One problem which you will face - your office lunch, what means - South Indian food. Rice, which served (separately) with some SPICY and OILY ... well "sauces", or "sambar".

I didn't notice the question about safety!

There's places its better not to go... stay out of the slum streets and fishing huts in the night, otherwise, it is safe.

India may be behind the times in some ways (good and bad) but it is not totally removed from them. Judging by the newspapers (which may or may not be a wise thing to do!) burglary and street crime are increasing, but, despite the possible pickings from the wallet, an Indian woman with a heap of gold around her neck is far more likely to be targeted than a foreigner.

Thanks Nick, I think burgulary and street crime is rising all over the global with people turning to crime as its an easy option to get money in these tough times, i was expecting it over there aswell. You're last line there does make alot of sense, once again thanks

In most parts of Chennai, one is unlikely to have one's pocket picked, and you can walk around with a mobile phone in your hand. Safer than London!

If you currently have a GSM cell phone that supports GSM 900 / GSM 1800 / GSM 1900 you can use it in India.
