What's it like living in Bangalore?

Hi,

I'm a researcher for a television production company and am doing some research on Bangalore for a new series about 2nd generation British Asians families moving to India.I was wondering if there is anyone on the ground who'd be able to give me an insiders view of the city? What are the usual challenges that expats face?

Many Thanks!

* difficult in adjusting to collectivism in east as compared to the individuality of the west
* difficult to fit in with people. accent would definitely be made fun of. people hanging out with such people might be labelled as servile. some of these people might perceive themselves as superior because they have lived in the west...
whereas some people may think that all expats think like this!
* difficult to adjust in the work culture. nightmarish experience in getting work done at bureaucratic places.
* oh....lots of things...different country...different rules!
* also...maslows hierarchy of needs applies here. the expats would have problems which seem superficial like oh...i have an
identity crisis as compared to problems like people not having food to eat!

oh i forgot...people who look like foreigners are given benefit of the doubt as they are not supposed to know anything...and people would go to great extents to help them. but with people of indian origin...who look india...some people may actually frown upon the fact that
they have lost touch with their indian culture and are just spoilt rich brats!

btw...please give me the link to your research once you are done if you dont mind.
would love to go through your findings! :-)

And don't forget that the traffic is horrible...

@the OP - are your questions aimed at western expats, or PIOs?

I learned on the news the other day that B'Lore's air quality is much worse than Calcutta, but much better than Dehli.

It was still in the unhealthy/warning zone.

Living in Bangalore is like living in San Fransisco, San Hose or Los Angeles, you know, the Silicon Valley cities. Thats what people in Bangalore would have you believe.

On what basis you are saying this? weather?

Basically there is a broken system in India overall. That is the big difference. US is a country where a system is funcitoning almost 95%. Once you get into that system, even if you are not social enough, you can survive on your own. This system is most suitable for independent living.

Indian system is broken and is not meant to live for individuals as indiviudals. It is society bound. So everybody is interested in your social involvement. Big cities may be slightly different.

There is a big difference whiel you live there for long. If it is a short term visit, it might be ok.

They worry about being fed more than having a good air these days. It is still a poor country.
