Shipping & customs - new items

Hello, we're finally coming out to India in February. We get a container of shipping allowance, and because we recently got married, we're brining a lot of new items, such as dinner sets, kettle, linen etc.

Could leaving everything packaged cause us problems at customs? ie will they want to impose duty etc?
I don't mind unpacking and repacking it, but would prefer not to!

Thanks!

I believe your company would also provide services of a local agency which handles the clearing aspects of the container at the local port. So, usually these agents take care of the issues related to this.

Usually they wont bother to look soo deep into household items which is being transferred. Worst case, it could get messy if you are bringing in stuff which is still unused/packed intact since it could constitute as import items & hence taxable. It is safe to repack it to avoid issues.

BTW, do you really want to pack everything? linen? plates etc? Isn't it easier to pick them up here in India & dump them when you leave? Everything depends on the duration & individual's choice though.

Thanks!
I've spoken to the shipping company who have also suggested that I do repackage new items, so I'll probably do that - they do the packing anyway, so it's not going to be a huge inconvenience.

Regarding what to bring - I get a ridiculous shipping allowance, which I will barely touch the sides of, so probably makes sense bringing much of our stuff with us. Not everything, as the place we're moving into is fairly well furnished, but pretty much everything else!
