Schools in Bangalore

Hi All

We are planning to move to Bangalore beginning next year and wanted to know which are the good schools these days in Bangalore. I have been told most of the good schools are close to the new Intl. airport like Vidya Shilp, DPS, etc.

I am not sure if we could afford the international school fees but I don't mind spending upto 5000 to 10000 per month per kid maximum.

Are there any good schools towards central Bangalore ie Indiranagar, airport road, Koramangala etc. I know there is a DPS that side but is it as good as DPS North.

I am new to the forum so please excuse if this is not the right forum or any such faux paus !

Regards

My daughter goes to Gopalan International School and I highly recommend them. Though the name includes International, the curriculam and fees are very much Indian.

Their facitlities, focuss of the teachers, as well as general atmosphere is very good.

Hi, uk2india

DPS North is better than the South one - my cousins r studying there & I like the huge campus that they hav. Due to the large size of the campus they hav a lot better facilities. However academics wise the two are pretty much the same. Theres a National Public School Near Koramangla - which is very good & they maintain their teacher student ratio at 1:30. In fact I've heard its even better than DPS - but getting into it might be a little tough. Avoid the other branches of NPS as they r terrible with extar curricular acitvties. Then of course there are the old timers like Bishop Cottons ( residency rd, near Bangalore club) - Its one of the oldest schools in bangalore & has a great reputation. I hav qt a few friends who studied there & all of them are doing very well. but the prob with them is they follow ICSE syllabus. With a budget of 10,000 a month I think u shld also enquire with Aditi Mallya International School, which again is on the hyderabad road, just a few Kms ahead of Hebbal tank - on the way to DPS North

Hi Sabby and Sudheer

Thanks for your replies. Much appreciated. Yes someone else mentioned NPS but I thought they were very academic and no extra curricular activities, no sports etc.

I will check Aditi Mallya too. Bishop Cottons is good but then the teachers to students ratio seems to be around 60 to 70 these days, which I think is a lot !

Are there any website where I can check the syllabus for 4th and 6th standard CBSE and ICSE ?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of ICSE and CBSE ? Or is that the topic of another thread ??

Thanks

Lightbulb ICSE / CBSE and the other boards

Hello Uk2India,

I do not know how relevant this question is to you at such a late stage (its almost 2 months since you last posted your query); still, allow me to add my two pence wisdom here, perhaps for the benefit of the others.

The ICSE / CBSE are analogous to the IGCSE board that you have in UK. If you are looking to settle down in India, and if you are likely to move from one city to another, then CBSE would be the best bet for your child (especially if the child is going to be a day boarder). Schools following the CBSE curriculum are prevalent in almost every nook and corner of the country; so if you find yourself uprooted from one city, then rest assured that there must be some school in the new destination where the same books and syllabii are followed. If you are able to secure admission for your child in one of the Kendriya Vidyalayas ("Central Schools"), then this becomes especially true. ICSE is not that popular (yet) among schools.

But in case you are going to stay put in the same city (Bangalore) for some time to come, then you might find the option of IGCSE / IB more attractive than CBSE / ICSE. The latter boards, especially CBSE, still value rote, which is not the case with IGCSE. There are quite a few schools that offer IGCSE. Depending on where you are put up, I can suggest some good ones (if you have not already done so).

Hth,
Sanjay.

Old Stays

I know of some of the old schools who have been there for eons. Not in the area you are looking at though. Baldwin's, Bishop Cottons, St. Joseph's. etc...

Sudheer,
I'd like to hear more about Gopalan? We have an 8 & a 6 year old (2nd grade & kindergarten) and are in Bangalore in Jan 07. Gopalan sounded really good from the website, i like their approach, philosophy and vision but would love to hear a first hand impression and experience from you if possible! Thanks.

diferences in school systems

Hi Tarter family, I noticed you live in WA state. I don't know specifics about Banglore schools since I am in Delhi but you should know that Indian schools, even the "International" ones are quite different from American schools. For example, recess where the kids are free to run around and are not supervised may not be a part of the schools that have been recommended to you. Exams are given from kindergarten onward and the pressure on the children is intense. School hours are from mornings until early afternoon (1:30 or so), 6 days a week. Yes, kids go to school on Saturday. The school year is July to April for most schools.

It is hard for kids to leave their country and move to another. Maybe an Indian school will be a great exeperience, maybe it will be another misery for them. Check out these schools carefully and ask lots of open ended questions. Then, trust your eyes, not what the school officials tell you. Make sure you are talking about the same thing when you ask about recess and such. And, please check out the Canadian school too. I am speaking from experience here: when your kids are unhappy it is hard to enjoy India. Good Luck.

Gopalan school

Gopalan school was very professional and I would say to a very large extent following the philosophy in the website.. Normally as you can understand the advertisement is quite far away from the reality. But in this case, they do follow that spirit.

I highly recommend them, however I have left India and my daughter no longer goes there, hence I would not be able to tell you the status of this year. I know they have bought in a hot shot principal and supposed to have gone to next level of expansions.

However, I am not too sure if Jan would be early enough for the next year admission. Admissions are quite competitive and almost like getting into harward! So be prepared to be surprised. Not just in Gopalan, but almost in all the schools mentioned there.
