Smile Need Information on Schools

Hello,

I am moving to Bangalore in a few months time and really looking for expert advice on schools. Checked a lot of websites and they are sound great but sometimes ground realities can be qute different and Bangalore is a new city for me and I am nervous about finding the right school for my son. Heres what I am looking for pls could someone guide me ?

school which balances academics and extra curricular actvities
No rote learning
good teacher to student ratio
Trained and qualified and permanent teaching staff (I hear some schools teachers are temps and change too often ??)
School who can really work with you in bringng out the potential of the child
Fees must be moderate

If all these criterion is met and yet they dont have great looking schools its ok for me. Good environment and a wholesome education comes first. Please could someone help ?

Many Thanks.

Reshma

Check this site: http://india.english-schools.org/index.htm

I'm less than impressed with Indian schools and recommend international schools instead, especially those using an international curriculum.

Hi Ranjan,

Can you let us know the process of admission at Treamis. I have heard good reviews about the school. However since lot of expats are seeking info about admissions in good schools in Bangalore your inputs would be useful and also for my personal knowledge.

if you can cover some of the answers like, admission procedures, donation amount if any, is any recommendation needed ? school fees ( annual ) did you take your ward to the school for a personal interview and written test .

Raghu

Sure Raghu.

The admissions procedure is very simple. I registered on line and wire transferred about 150 dollars in December. The school counselor talked to my son over the phone. She wanted to make sure that my son’s age was appropriate to the grade he was seeking admission. She asked few academic questions. This process assured the seat. In early March, I made a pre move trip to Bangalore and visited the school. I paid Rs. 70,000 towards fee (Rs. 35K per semester) and a refundable security of Rs. 25K. This is for 8th grade. They have different fee structure for different grades. There are no donations or capitation fee. I paid the resident Indian fee. If I were to be in the USA and send my son as a hostel student, they would’ve charged me NRI fee. That would be $1400 per semester.

They give first preference to students coming from foreign countries…. particularly to those coming from the USA and UK. 80% of the promoters of the school are NRI/Expats. Most of them live in the USA and UK. Their objective is to facilitate continuation of education process for relocating children. The school combines the best of both worlds. They have adopted US education environment and have a hybrid global curriculum up to 8th grade. For high school, they offer Indian CBSE as well as IGCSE (UK-Cambridge) curricula.

Krishnamurti and other alternative schools...

Look at Shibumi (http://shibumi.org.in) and CFL (http://cfl.in), but note that they are very small schools offering a very different kind of education, so only consider them if you have similar views:

"The deepest concern of the school is to bring up children who are free, responsible and concerned with the whole of life. ....we are exploring a totally different kind of education which creates the freedom to bring about clarity in the mind. From this direct sense of what it means to be free, all else must flow."

You can also think of The Valley School as a larger, slightly more main-stream option.

Look at this website for a list of alternative schools: http://alternativeeducationindia.net....htm#karnataka
