Are you arriving as expat or on Indian salary rates depends a lot.
The cost of living decreases drastically the more you move towards the outskirts of the city. |

Bangalore Cost of Living
Hi ,
As mentioned by Snehansu, we would like to know if you would be getting a local package or Expat package. If you are on a local package then you would need to manage the day care, housing, utilities, Car, if you are on a expat package then you dont have to worry about accomodation and travel and need to take care of only your domestic and food expenses. Also are you looking at bringing your household goods from Israel to bangalore or are you looking at furnished accmodation. If the University would pay for the relocation then you can bring your goods and look out for unfurnished accommodation. Lets take your queries further once we hear more from you. Regards, Raghu Quote:

Lecturers in India are not paid much at all. I was shocked to see a notice board at a renowned college in Bangalore inviting applications with salary ranges 10K(PhD w/3 yrs experience) - 30K(PhD w/10 years experience) per month. That kind of money won't make for a good living with family in Bangalore.
City rents are much higher than in the outskirts. Even though, bargain hard. An apartment may cost you Rs 15000 - Rs 20000 per month in rent. An agent will try to present to you an inflated rent, so find out for yourself what the current rents actually paid in that area are. Even decent daycares are not cheap. Could run around Rs 1500/child/month. Plus there is usually a big registration fee (about 10K). School tuitions at private elementary schools are about Rs 35K/year, add bus fees to that. International schools cost a lot more. Ask your college to find you apartment and daycare. For some outdated reason, landlords ask 10 months rent as security deposit. You can bargain with that and insist on paying just 4 months'. Now, with slowdown in economy, there are lots of vacant apartments all over Bangalore. Please seach in this forum for similar info. there have been prior such discussions. |

Hiya, thank you for your quick answer.
The salary is 120K just it without packing ![]() do you know good place to live in? we're looking for a suv and not really in the city. the most importent is that it'll be a walk distance (up to 20 minutes) to the day care. any chance for living in a place with nice facilites like pool, gym, play area? if the salary is 120K - 20K for the house - 3K for the day care, I think it'll give us some saving money or I'm wrong? Do we need a car? It won't be easier to DH to use buses, train? is it useless or good? I'll be happy to hear about the city! Thank you for helping me! |

120K per month is good salary. Yes, you can find 3 bdrm/2bath apartments for 20K in outskirts (meaning about 12 klms from city center, although even that can take 45 mins to reach) , with swimming pool, gym, childrens' playground. Make sure you ask what the extra maintenance costs are, that tenants have to pay. Builders like Mantri, Brigade, Raheja, all build apartment complexes all over the city outskirts with these facilities.
Good daycares will be around everywhere - it just may take some time to locate one. Once you get familiar with the surroundings, that won't be hard. Re. good place to live, where is the college? Find something close to there, unless college is in city center. Bangalore is quite western. Commuting through traffic and dust and smog can sap you out of all your energy and patience. Public transportation is not bad, but it can get crowded, and I have found I spent a lot of time waiting for connecting buses. If it is just one bus ride, it may be doable. But to go around with little children, you may want a car. You can buy a small used car with 200,000 klms on it for INR 200000. Or, you can buy a new SUV for INR 800000. Other initial setup expenses are water filter (about 14K), battery backup (to cover the power cuts) min 14K, getting gas connections (private ones suck you up for 6K). Depending on how long your assignment will be, you can decide whether or not to ship your furniture. Because furniture here are expensive and crappy. |

Reg Moving to Blore
Hi Yaya,
As mentioned by our other member, 120 K is a pretty cool sum per month. Hope it is net salary after tax deduction, otherwise there is a 33.3 % tax slab rate. You can get a decent apartment for 25 or 30 K with all the facilities you wanted. However lets us know where your college is located and accordingly we shall suggest a few residential areas for you to shortlist. You may also visit www.99acres.com to have a fair idea of the real estate scenario. Would your college give you a shipping allowance or reimburse the actual cost of shipment of your household goods ? I would suggest you buy a car or lease a car. Shall discuss more on this on hearing from you. Regards, Raghu Quote:

Relocation costs:- You can call up some International packers and movers to get an idea of costs. When we moved from US to Bangalore, we shopped around and paid US $5000 for a 20 ft container, door-to-door. If you do it all yourself, you have to go to customs to clear duties, etc. It is best you ask your University to take care of all that. There is no import duty on used household furniture, but if a printer arrives in the container without a computer, they slap some duty on it. LCD TV incurs import duty. Random rules here and there. I did not enjoy spending a whole day at customs, even though they do not harrass you there.
Are you an Indian in Israel? Or an Israeli? If you are a foreigner, just get your Univ. to take care of all that. |

Hi Yaya
Hi Yaya,
First you must decide what you want to ship to Bangalore. Once you decide that contact a couple of International Relocation companies who would give you a quote.I can refer two companies for your reference. www.CrownRelo.com and www.UniversalRelocations.com Visit their website and request for a free online quote. In the meanwhile check with your college about the process. whether they would give you a flat amount or would they reimburse the actual shipment cost. In any case you would need to be fair to your employer so you would need to go with the least quoting company. Visit their websites. so that you would know how much it is going to cost and whether your University would cover the complete expenses including insurance of goods. The shipping company would take care of end to end relocation process, that is packing and collection of goods at your residence and then deliver it in Bangalore after getting customs clearance. Let us know where the University is located, Best Wishes Raghu Quote:

Hosur Road is one of the long main roads of Bangalore, extending from south of downtown , all the way to Hosur in a Southwest direction. It cuts through Koramangala, which is a pretty self-contained place in itself. See, within Bangalore, there are sub-areas, you need to know which the name of the area. The college should have that in its address. If it is Koramangala, you will be fine. But it it is somewhere near Hosur, you may not be fine.
Then, google with the "map of , Bangalore. You may get a better idea. |
