Hi guys, I'm very new to this - so excuse any faux pas's! My husband and I are looking to move to Bangalore and he has been offered a position with a salary of £14-18 Lak. This is not with his existing employer - so it's not a transfer from the UK to India but we are doing this as we enjoy adventuring and want to do something different! We have been doing our research and understand: House (2-3 bed): 60K per month New car: 1300K Driver: 5K pcm A few questions: 1. He does not have a work permit - how do we go about getting one? Perhaps via the embassy here in London? 2. Is the salary reasonable for someone with 11 years industry experience in resource management? We'd love to hear from anyone with any help and/or advice.

Hi and welcome to the site!!!
There is information on this on the site, just do some reading up on that till the replies start.. 2 things though... I dont know what you mean by £14-18 Lak ( Are you saying 14-18 lacs INR...per month or per year) Secondly, you have put 1300 against the new car. Again is this 1300 INR or 1300GBP.....? |

Thats whats i thought!!
Will let the Bangalore experts handle the other queries. But 1300 on a car , i am assuming you are talking monthly EMI's, is too low. The EMI would ofcourse depend on the initial deposit i.e the higher the down payment the lower the EMI. Unless you meant something else with 1300 INR? Your friends are right and wise!! This is where its happening!!! Quote:

14-18 lac a year is not that much for an expat salary. It depends on whether you will have to pay tax on it in your own country or in India. If it is after taxes, it is good enough, though not very generous.
Does the company pay for housing, a driver etc. ? |

Could I suggest to blenheim that she use standard western notation - and clearly indicate GBP or INR (or USD or whatever). Then everyone will know what's meant.

How about these figures?
Can anyone advise...if we're nearly there? Can a couple survive on 18 Lacs INR per year salary? 2000 INR monthly allowance for a medium car, (after deposit or initial downpayment paid) House (2 bed): 50000 INR per month Driver: 5000 INR per month All your help is appreciated |

The salary you are quoting is what an Indian middle manager would be getting. Its not an expat salary. But that should not deter you. an indian earning this salary would be definitely living an upper middleclass lifestyle which is very far away from "survival". 1. th EMI or monthly mortgage payment on the car will depend on the cost of the car and the initial downpayment. In case of a car costing 400000 INR(compact hatchback) with 10% downpayment, the monthly payments will be around at least 5000 to 6000. 2. you can get 2-3 bedroom flats for 15000-20000(unfurnished) to sky is the limit. depends on your requirements 3. driver will be around 5000 to 7000. |

1,800,000INR - 24,000INR - 600,000INR - 60,000INR = 1,116,000INR
That leaves about 3,050INR per day for everything else. Your call from there I'd say. It's not a lot by western standards. |

As far as the car goes you will have to make quite a downpayment in terms of percentage to be able to hit that EMI figure.
For example a Wagon r , whose basic version will come in about 350,000 road... Say its a 100,000 downpayment i.e 250,000 will be the loan amount. max tenure is 7 years for an auto loan i.e 84 Months. So loan amount divided by 84 leaves you with.. 2976 In reality its 2976 + interest. The downpayment in this case actually needs to be around the region of 200,000 (which leaves you with 1756 + interest) i.e 56% percent of the car's on road price. And given by what you are saying, i would assume you are looking at buying a bigger car than the Wagon R. |

Brilliant - thanks all for that, really good to speak to those in the know.
Sounds like if we're in it for the ride - rather than saving loads of cash it could be a go-er but we need to find out about taxes/if the car is included etc Next on the agenda is a work permit. I have been looking and it seems like the longest work visa you can get is a yearly one but you have to leave every 3 months for a period of time? Does this match with what you guys have experience of? Presuming it's the responsibility of the employer to arrange this if they offer you a job? |

Bangalore
14 - 18 INR per year (that is about 1.5 lakhs a month) is just about middle class in Bangalore. Don't go for Rs 60,000 per month rent, that will not leave you much to have fun with or to save (if you are into saving some money). You should be able to get a very decent flat in a very decent community for Rs 20K - 40K (with swimming pool and playground and clubhouse). If you go lower than that in rent, you will find nice places in middle class Indian neighborhoods.
There is a big time "initial" expense - car, water filter, power backups. New cars between 5 - 10 lakhs, we had previously looked at used car shops, found they were all odometer altered! Used cars run between 2 - 5 lakhs. Renting cars becomes VERY expensive. Food is cheap. But our biggest expense so far has been travel. Eating out is a lot of fun, we try different restaurant at different times, and that could also be expensive. How about medical insurance? Your company should cover that. That could get expensive too. NIB. |

Blenheim, your husband must get an Employment Visa.
If that is granted, you should be granted an "Entry" ("X") visa for the same period of time, and neither of you will have to leave India for visa renewal whilst he continues to do this job, and continues to have his visa renewed, in India. It is your responsibility to apply for visas in UK. You will have to submit a letter of confirmation from his employer, which should also state why they are unable to employ an Indian resident national in the post. Do not expect an Indian employer to understand their country's immigration laws; unless they regularly employ foreigners it is unlikely that they will. You can find advice and experience here, but please check out the official sites for reference! Your faux pas is in not reading the many threads here about this stuff , and the questions and answers from lots of members in similar situations, but hey, don't worry too much, you are very welcome to the site! ![]() Do a heap of browsing in the expat sections (look under different cities too; a lot is common) and the visa section. |
