hey i'm in the same situation. been waiting for more than 3 months now and i'm getting highly frustrated...did they also send your application to home affairs in delhi? Went to the embassy in brussels yesterday to inform for the 307th time but i was told i was wasting their time as well as my own...

How about other european expats working in india: how long did it take to get your visas?

woops, I just handed in my employment visa application this morning. Also I was told it might take 2 or 3 months since it will be sent to delhi. I dont want to wait really that long. Did any of you guys ask your india company to enquire with the Ministry of Home Affairs and speed up the process?

Btw, I am coming to Bangalore as well

my company, actually an ngo that's working together with the govt., doesn't do any bribing, if that's what you mean by speeding it up...
They have tried to contact people, even pretty high diplomacy people, after which i got a phonecall it was going to be allright soon, and that's one month ago...

I didnt think of bribing at all. Speed up is just speed up, I thought if the india side process can be tracked, it will be easier and quicker to get the visa. Any idea y it is taking such a long time?

srisri, speeding this up is a eufimism for bribing, the people at the embassy even use it, they suggested that my employers try themselves to speed things up in delhi...

why this procedure? i think it must have something to do with diplomatic ties and bilateral agreements between countries: apparently people from france get it in 3 days, and one of my to collegues to be is a german national who got it in less than a week, a austrian or swiss girl who worked there even had it the same day....

another thing might be the kind of work: apparently research and development cooperation are a bit sensitive in india, but another belgian guy who applied for a 1 year visa for a research project with a biotech company the same day i applied also got his visa immediately...

when i ask 'why' at the embassy they say ask delhi, when i ask for the phonenumber from the person in home affairs who decides they tell me they can not give it, when i ask wether it is a political thing they say ' we can not comment on that, please ask a senior official', when I ask for the senior offical he's never there, when he's there he tells me he will look in to it, call back in a week, a week later he's not there and so on...

what to do, what to do?

If the NGO you're working with has got a religious affiliation, then you might be waiting a lot longer than you think. If you've been following the Indian papers for some time, a couple of years ago, all NGOs were asked to submit their finance funding, support & people working for them. Non-Hindu NGOs were particularly targetted to explain their funding et al. This was at the height of the anti-conversion bill non-issue by the then ruling party.

& so, if your organisation has been the target of some search, then you'll be waiting a lot longer. Google news for your organisation and see whether it has been oinvolved in any issues with the Govt. That would explain any delay.

Really sad

I cannot believe that!!. I've just beginning dealing with my visa. If I have to wait three month to start working I think I'm gonna get mad.
What the hell do they do in Delhi to spend three month in giving a visa?. Why French and Austrian people obtain them in less than a week or so?. This is incredibly messy and makes me feel really angry.
I have asked the people in the embassy for speeding up my visa, but they said it all depends on India and they can do nothing. If only they have a temporary permission or something like that to allow people moving into India in less time. All these papers are not good for India, for the companies(I will work for an Indian company) and the workers.

I have a few persons from Spain working here in my company. And yes all of them are here for translation related work itself. So let me check out with HR and let you know how we get the people on board soon. Normally in matter of weeks.

But you will have to wait for that till next week

Drifter, the ngo i'm going to work for is a non confessional ngo but does get funding by christian ngo's from germany and the netherlands. these are quite professional big international organisations and not the missionary kind of ngo's that are around.

As far as i know the organisation has ok relations with the government. actually they are a recognised project implementing organisation for some government schemes...
And like i said, for the German and Austrian people it was no problem...

So I really think it's a bilateral/ diplomacy thing, or maybe they just lost the file somewhere...

Like I said, I'm just hazarding a guess but there might be a simpler explanation as you say.

Thank you Sudheer
I don't mind to wait until next week if you can give me any information about how to obtain the visa in Spain in less than two month.
