help needed on where to live in Bangalore
Hi all
Next month I will be moving to Bangalore (I still canīt believe it). I saw in some threads that is adviceable to live close to the office, yet I am having difficulties to find out where to live. My oficce is at Infantry Road, (I believe close to the cricket stadium?!?). Yet at real state webpages (ie indianproperties) houeses are listed under the neibourghood name, therefore I am not sure where should I look for. I would appreciate any hint about which areas of the city should I look for to avoid traffic jams or even to have the possibility of walking to office. Also Iīll very thankful if anyone of you know names of compounds in the area where I should check for apartment. thnx PS: if anyone is selling a car, or enfield motorbike, pls send me details. |

I left about a year ago and at that time Bangalore had some of the worst traffic thinkable. I don't know whether it has improved but I assume not.
I would suggest to live as close as possible to work, indeed it would be ideal if you could walk. |

For Infantry Road, try Cantontment, Cunningham Road, Fraser Town, Coles Park, Vasant Nagar, R.T. Nagar, Sultan Palya.

Get ahold of the Eicher street atlas of Bangalore, so that you can see how nabes match up with streets. You'll want it when you're living here anyway.

Living in central Bangalore can be very expensive. Unless you can walk to your job, its not worth the high rents. Manoj has suggested locations that are close, though not walking distance, from Infantry road.

well, I really hate lossing time in traffic jams. I currently live in Madrid where the traffic is awful. I wouldn´t mind to pay mare or to live in a samller apt as long as I could get rid off jams.
So crvlvr could you suggest me some street/area names? I´ve seen many porperties available on MG Road...convenient place?? . Would a motorbike bypass jams or its the same? |

As crvlvr said, the places I mentioned are not walkable but reasonably nearby (within about 20 or 30 minutes commute). M.G. Road is going to be incredibly expensive. A motorbike can bypass traffic jams, but only if you ride it the Indian way (weaving in and out of traffic and riding on the footpath
)Both M G Road & Cunningham Road would be at walkable distance (about 10 to 15 minutes walk) from Infantry Road. Areas immediately around Infantry Road are either commercial or part of the Army establishment (as the name of the road itself suggests), so you may not have much luck getting places there. |

At the time we had an large independent four bed room house in Koramangala for Rs.55,000, but when we left they asked 1.5 lakh for it
, so I am not sure what you can get these days. But I assure you it is worth paying a bit more in order to be close to work. Why do you not make it the problem of the company, so instead of a budget you negociate that they find you accomodation within 5 km from your office. |

My company has just rented a house near the office, yet it is for the use of ALL the expats they send to Bangalore, yet all of them go there on short-term projects (ie 2 weeks, 2 months, nothing longer), while I will be there on a permanent basis. Therefore I am not willing to share what it is supposed to be my home. even though they have accepted this premise , they don´t seem very happy with it. that´s why I want to make the whole issue easy for them by collecting information of properties available at an afordable budget before moving there, something that will happen in 2 weeks !
btw... how much is 1 lakh? 5 zeros right?...and a crole or something like that? |

1 lakh is 100,000 about Euro 2,000
A crore is about Euro 250,000 I see your point and I think you are right, living and working in India is fun but can be difficult and it is good to have your own place where you feel good. At times I find it a huge relieve when I can close the front door and India is 'outside'. Of course when the electricity fails India is right back in doors ![]() .I would say get at least Rs.40,000 from them. |

You absolutely need privacy.
Go for that shared house and you'll find, one day, six blokes sleeping on your bedroom floor --- and everybody will be absolutely mistified that you think there is anything wrong with that!

mfeisto, yor best bet may be to sign up for the office provided accomdation temporarily. Once you get to Bangalore, and understand the lay of the land you strart looking for a place of your own. It will be more reasonable to share an apartment (and helps split the headaches of a recently arrived expat with a roommate) Most of the apts don't advertise on the web, and if they do its usually at inflated rates targeting the naive expats.
As manoj has indicated, Infantry raod is asurrounded by a military base and the few neighborghoods that are adjacent to it are either highly commercialized or run down mohallas. you can take a look at this satellite pix:http://www.wikimapia.org/#lat=12.980...17&l=0&m=a&v=2 Ridingn a bike will get you though traffic better than a 4 wheeler. But, you will have to breath the polluted and air and have to deal with the not so safe driving conditions. If you have never ridden a motorcycle before you arrive , India is not the best place to start. |
