Cost of Living in Bangalore
Hello,
I am moving to Bangalore for about 4 months to work. I'm hoping someone can recommend some nice neighborhoods to live in in central Bangalore. Also, what is the approximate cost of a 1 bedroom furnished flat per month? |

Welcome to IM. Difficult to find a one bedroom fully furnished apartment, especially for 4 months duration. Your best bet is staying in a service apartment. You can negotitate the price since you are staying for long term...there are plenty of service apartment and you google regarding the same. Now that the market is not good, you might get some really good deals. Good luck mate. Cheers! |

renting out for 4 months may be a tad difficult as manzey has written... i concur - service apartments are your best bet. central bangalore will cost more than a little less central. what is your budget? welcome to IM ![]() :brishti |

Living on a budget
Thanks Manzey and Brishti,
I am looking to spend no more than R10,000 per month on accommodation. As nice as the service apartments look, all the ones I can see look to be out of my budget. My work is centrally located, so I thought it would be easiest to live close to work. If I were to live less centrally, is there an inexpensive, fast mode of transit you might suggest? |

If you wish to be centrally located then you should try living
near M.G Road, Residency Road, Infantry Road, Koramangla that is where most of the expat community lives I think... If you have a budget of only 10,000 then I would suggest living in a paying guest.. but do check the rates, surroundings and the type of people who will live with you.. And also since you are a foreigner they might try to rip you off.. http://www.payingguest.in/cityPostings.do The cheapest way of traveling is by public bus.. but it is definitely not recommended... That leaves you with the option of an autorickshaw or a taxi.. Try Meru - http://www.merucabs.com/ They charge 15 Rs a Km

Rs10,000 for 1 fully furnished 1 BHK maybe possible in the outskirts. But at expat charges it'll never be possible.
The concept of rent in Bangalore is - You have to pay 11 months rent as advance and enter an egreement with the owner - At the end of every month you have to pay the rent/( water /electricity as applicable - since its sometimes included + maintenance charges if staying in apartments and not included in rent) - If you leave before 11 months you have forego 2 months rent, so you will get back 9 months rent out of 11. Expat/Foreigner charges I heard are typically 40,000 Rs plus and generally fully furnished. If there are no legal / social problems I guess you can checkout the admags and like for a normal apartment and furnish it according to your own needs. |

INR 10k is muchly doable for a paying guest accommodation in the centre of town.
before you close the 'deal' for any PG accommodation - please clarify with the tenant... the do's and dont's: is there a deadline for returning home at night? are guests allowed to visit you in your PG... specifically male guests? are guests allowed to stay over? and any other queries you may have to clear regarding your lifestyle etc. clarifications of this sort generally prevents 'misunderstandings' as the days go by! very important: make sure that your room has a separate entrance - not one that you have to waft across the family residence. there will also be a matter of security deposit - which is a lumpsum, that is returned to you at the end of your tenure... generally a total 10 months rent [ this amount is negotiable ]. good luck. :brishti |

My friend's experience
My friend recently moved to Banglore with his wife and three kids.
He talked to me last week and was explaining the cost of living. He lives in a 3 bed apartment, gated community, swimming pool, Gym etc in the city. his rent goes by 35000/month. He has a Car, driver, helper at home, his daughter going to an international school etc.. So his estimated cost of living is around 100000 Rs/Month. He preferred to have an expensive life style I guess being a VP of a company. But is it that expensive in Banglore? |

Well...yes...if you want that kind of lifestyle. For ex: Rent 35k pm International school around 10k pm Driver 7k pm Domestic help 3k pm Maintenance chanrges for gated community (club, ppol gym etc) 5k pm Petrol 5 to 10k pm Phone / Cable / Electricity / Water 15k pm and the list goes on like food / eating out travelling etc. Well, its possible to have a decent lifestyle with half that money aswell. Cheers! |

Any half decent school atleast in Gurgaon, costs close to 8-10k per month.
So you may want to double the school amount above. Even domestic help takes 4-5k if they are full day helps.

Caveat: Expat salary. For the same type of facilities you have listed above, in Gurgaon it would be 1.5 Lakhs per month. This may be slighlty exaggerated because there are some start-up costs included in my first few months, that are hard to isolate. I think, 3 months down the road, maybe 1 Lakh would suffice. That wouldn't hurt. ![]() |

Didn't mean to come off as pompous - just offering a realistic picture for Expats.
Plus, money is not everything - in fact it's hardly anything. Unless you don't have any, which situation I have have faced many times. |

So is it like Indian cities coming as close to US cities now huh? Cost is almost 2000-3000$? Then one must be making around 5000-6000$ /month if to save some after tax etc.
So is it like 30-35 lakhs salary is standard for IT executives in Baglore and Gurgaon? (Wondering what would a man with 50K salary would do in a city like Banglore. No wonder it became an IT hub and all others had a run fo their lifetime) |

If you are going to live like a normal city dweller here, you should be able to get a decent 2 room apt for 15k, add another 15-20k for your expenses (assuming you would buy a car, & can drive it yourself, only for commuting in the city), send your kid to a normal school spending around 3-4k a month & you should be able to fit into the man with a 50k salary category ![]()
