The cost of things?

Hi,
I am returning to India after a 13 year absence and would like to get a handle on the cost of things so I can budget realistically for the trip. I have looked at some threads but found nothing recent, so would you kindly tell me what I can expect to pay for:

a chappati
a thali meal (street vendor)
a sit-down dinner in a fairly good restaurant
a 15 minute ride in an auto-rikshaw
1 night in a single room in a guesthouse (shared bathroom)
Public bus fare
A movie in a movie theatre
a 1 litre bottle of drinking water
A bottle of local soft drink
A bottle of local beer vs. a bottle of imported beer
An hour on the internet
A tailor-made shalwar kameez

And which major currency is best for emergency money: Pounds, Dollars or Euros – in terms of exchange rate?

Major currency for emergency money - INR . Would guess it should be USD...other members would clarify.

All prices are indicative and would depend on city, locality et al....

Ah, but Rupees are harder to hide because in the required amounts they take up so much more space...

Thanks for the information, ribhu. I forgot to mention in my original posting that I am looking for averages, so your x to x answers are good.

(I am going to be flying to somewhere in the south, probably Bangalore, and travelling in the western part of the country, ending in Shimla, so I will be covering quite a lot of ground).

My estimation for you:

a chappati -> Rs 5
a thali meal (street vendor) -> Rs 50-Rs 75
a sit-down dinner in a fairly good restaurant -> Rs 150
a 15 minute ride in an auto-rikshaw -> Rs 50
1 night in a single room in a guesthouse (shared bathroom) -> Rs 150
Public bus fare -> Rs. 5 - Rs. 15
A movie in a movie theatre -> Rs 150 (multiplex), Rs 75 (cinema hall)
a 1 litre bottle of drinking water -> Rs. 10 - Rs. 20
A bottle of local soft drink -> Rs 10
A bottle of local beer vs. a bottle of imported beer -> Rs. 40 (local), Rs 150 - Rs 200 (imported)
An hour on the internet -> Rs. 10
A tailor-made shalwar kameez -> Rs. 300 - Rs 400

And which major currency is best for emergency money: Pounds, Dollars or Euros – in terms of exchange rate? -> Dollars

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Ashish

OK ONE THING LET ME TELL YOU SIR, THE COST OF BELOW THINGS DEPENDS ON CITY, AND THE AREA. ANYWAYS AS PER MY EXPERIENCE I CAN TELL YOU A PRICE RANGE FROM STREET SIDE TO RESTAURANT

a chappati

Roadside: 4 chapattis + Subji = 15 Rs
Hotel : 2 Chapatis + Subji = 40 Rs

a thali meal (street vendor)

15 - 40 Rs

a sit-down dinner in a fairly good restaurant

100 - 300 (for two people)

a 15 minute ride in an auto-rikshaw

hehehe in my earlier city it used to cost around 30 Rs but if you come to chennai you might end up paying 500 Rs. And I dont know what you mean by 15 minute, hope you dont plan to tell teh Autowala to drive for 15 mins and leave you whereever auto stops after 15 mins ;-)

1 night in a single room in a guesthouse (shared bathroom)

no idea

Public bus fare

2.50 t0 50 rupees

A movie in a movie theatre
a 1 litre bottle of drinking water

10 -15 rs
A bottle of local soft drink
8 - 15 rs

A bottle of local beer vs. a bottle of imported beer
An hour on the internet
10 - 30 rs

A tailor-made shalwar kameez
