telephoning India
Oh deary me! What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help me?I have been trying to telephone a friend in Bihar but the mobile number that I used last year gets no response. I keep trying to call several Thai Monasteries in Bihar, using the listed numbers, but I get no ringing tone or I get a recorded message saying that the number does not exist. have the numbers in Bihar changed? For example, the number given for the Thai temple in Nalanda is (001) The international dial code then 91 (India's national code then the number 06112 81819.For Bodhgaya the number (001 91) 631 2200 4470. I have tried many times, both using and omitting the first zero. can anyone please tell me what I should be doing? |

You should dial + 91 (country code) 631 (Gaya's STD code), followed by the phone number. |

1 is the country code for the US... and calling a number in india should require only 91 not a 001 in the beginning. the 001 is routing the call to the US...
(cross posted with LilBoy BigTown) rest is as LilBoy BigTown says.... |

Thank you so much Lilboy and Thejag for your speedy replies. However, the mystery continues. I live in Thailand and I have to dial 001 to get international. I then have to dial the country. I make a lot of overseas calls, so I know that that part is right. I omit the first zero as instructed. I have dialed several numbers many many times with the same lack of success. Because none of my Bihar numbers work, I suspect that Bihar has changed its numbers, probably adding another d
igit to the existing numbers. The whole telephone system for Bihar state couldn't be down, could it? |

A mobile number requires no STD code.
If mobile number is 912345678 To dial this mobile/cellphone number, you need to do +91912345678 (you say + = 001, so that's what it is) It is only a landline that will require the city code-minus the first zero. If a landline no. is 23456789, then for Gaya you would dial +9163123456789 I don't think numbers have changed across Bihar, not sure.

still can't get Bihar
I have now been in touch with our local International telephone Directory. They say that numbers in India now have an extra digit and they don't know what this digit is for Bihar. Does any kind person know what this digit is and where it must be added?

The STD code + the phone number should together be 10 digits.
There is something wrong about both the numbers(nalanda and bodh gaya)that you have given - the nalanda number is nine digits(the 0 infront of the 6 has to be discounted) and the bodhgaya number is 11 digits. |

] correct... STD code + number = 10 digits.std code for nalanda is 6112 - should have 6 digits following it... you have just 5 kevin. std code for bodh gaya is 631 - should have 7 digits following it... you have 8 digits. here's the good news - at least i hope its good and all works out! i called bodh gaya with the 11 numbers and i got through .talk about a random, awkward conversation - however, the gent on the other end informed me, the correct number is... 631 220 0447calling from BKK the number would be - +91 631 220 0447 i did my orphan annie act [shucks, works over the phone as well ] and enquired about the thai temple number in nalanda.received the mobile number of a guide in nalanda - prahlad - 99399 95626 [who asked me to call back and then...] head priest of thai temple - 94308 39412. [he was vague about the name - but it sounded akin acham kham or thereabouts] calling from BKK the number would be +91 94308 39412 hope it helps - do get back and let us know if it worked out. loved this quasi detective work - just hope it helped though !!!!:brishti |
