Paying for Car & Driver - Cash or Credit? Before or After?
From my reading a car & driver doing the Kochi, Munnar, Periyar route should cost around 1,500 rps per day (all inclusive of fuel, taxes, and the driver's food and accomadation). How many miles/kms can be expected at this rate? What form of payment is generally acceptable and are they paid upfront, daily or at the end of the trip? Do they give a receipt or written agreement?
Thank you, again! Carol |

Not sure what the daily rates are, but if you book an all inclusive package, car and driver costs are part of it.
Have you been to Kerala before? If it is your 1st time, you might consider booking a package. You can go to this site www.ktdc.com and have a look. I went to Kerala on one of their packages and it was good. Its not too heavy on pocket and whilst accommodation is not exactly 5 star, its decent enough. The best thing is it takes away the hassle of booking each accommodation seperately. They will take cash, but you could also do a bank transfer. Credit card option wasn't available when I booked, could well be there now. Last edited by LilBoy BigTown : Sep 12th, 2009 at 07:11. Reason: typo |

If you're paying the car driver directly - cash in rupees, at the end of the trip (with a suitable tip added if you're satisfied with his service).

We have only engaged a car and driver for multiple days once, and that time we paid in cash at the end of the trip.
Oh, we did give him Rs 500 upfront on day one to help him out with petrol costs, but that was not extra, that came out of the total. ![]()

Payment is normally in cash, with a tip for the driver if you're happy with his services.
1500 Rs/day sounds about right for that area with an a/c cab and as you say, everything's included in that price, you don't need to pay for the driver's food/lodging (if you pay for lodging the driver will most likely pocket the money and sleep in the car anyway). Don't ever pay upfront in India, cash upon delivery is the gold standard here, and for good reason, I might add. One exception as Haylo mentions: fuel, but to be deducted from the final bill of course. |
