Wink opening bank account in india?

hi there!
really relieved to have found this site with just days

before departure; the advice here is gold dust! My plan is to

travel for two months and had I not gleaned the info here would

have not realized the extensiveness of ATMS and if not swallowed

or blocked, is a wise option instead of carrying lots of

travellers checks which i had origonally planned. The problem

being I have a credit card which slaps on alot of charges when

abroad and have no time to apply for the friendlier ones?

Am I being naive to think that I could open an account with a

one travellers cheque at a reputable and popular Indian bank

that has branches everywhere, as an option and alternative back

up to my only other credit card? Any ideas?

There's a few threads here on this subject and if I remember correctly, the general consensus is that opening a bank account for the short term is more hassle than it's worth. Better to hook up with a bank that has a presence in India and charges low fees.

Did you try searching?

Ruth,

Welcome to IM!

You could simply try searching! The search bar is on the top right section of every IM window. And I just tried a search there with string "short term bank account", and it gave some links to good threads as Hal was referring! It's easy! Just 2 of them are given below.

You could also google I guess.

Is there yet a worthwhile way for a short term traveller to open Indian bank accounts

Bank accounts
