Mumbai airport exchange ~

I'm sure I've asked this before but...can I exchange my €uros into rupees at the airport ?
I'll be arriving around 3am so will the offices be open ?
Also what's the rate of exchange like at the airport , is it worth just changing enough for the taxi etc and then waiting till I get into Mumbai ?

We were just going over the entire theme again, here, http://www.indiamike.com/india/forum...ollars-t91335/. While that's about Delhi airport, the story should be pretty much the same in Mumbai.

Check also Mumbai airport's website at http://www.csia.in/ on facilities & stuff.

Yes you can as long as the airport is open and flights are coming in.. which is nearly 24 hours. It will be as bad as it is in any EU/US airport. A 20Euro should be sufficient to get you from BOM to any point in the city using pre-paid taxi.

In Bangkok their exchange places are all run by banks and the rate is almost the same as outside the airport , so it's not a pain changing up or losing out .

I was hoping €20 would do more than get me my taxi...I'll only be at Juhu Beach , don't tell me I'm wrong

Please, Hellsbells, you've been here so long and reading around so much... Of course NYC didn't mean just the taxi.

I don't know about your Juhu place (not necessarily the cheapest of areas in relatively expensive Mumbai, I believe?) but if you still need to pay for it it could work out a little meagre, but E 20 is currently Rs. 1400, this should normally see you to the next bank or ATM yes, and having your basics covered while you get there. Exchange E 50 or 100 first if it makes you feel better. (In Mumbai, Rs. 5000 can arguably fly away amazingly fast over nothing in particular, btw. Still, it would be more than ample to allow me to settle into my hotel and have a rest, then go looking for a bite and the next money spot at my leisure. Not if I needed to pay for my Rs. 5000+ hotel then and there, of course. Which again in Mumbai wouldn't have to see you to an incredibly luxurious room either.)

(Sheesh, don't mind me asking, but how do people get around the world these days? All those modern amenities at their disposal certainly don't seem to make them feel any better.)

As for those exchange rate differences, you'll be talking a couple of Rupees to the dollar (or Euro) btw. You'd have to be pretty anally retentive and/or intending to exchange a whole lotta money to be willing to lose any sleep over it. That said though, it is better to cover your first necessities at the airport, then handle the rest in town yes. Or when dealing with cash or traveler's cheques anyway; ATM's will just be governed by whatever governs them of course, notably your own bank's rules on foreign transactions. It doesn't matter if you use those at the airport or anywhere else. As noted on the other thread I pointed to above, if your own bank charges you hefty fees for such foreign transactions, then opt to make fewer and larger withdrawals.

nb Another handy way to navigate this site is to look at the listing of "similar threads" at bottom of most any thread when you've opened it; there look to be several relevant threads at bottom of this one, just scroll to bottom of page.

BKK is not India; BOM to Juhu (JWM in particular) in Feb '09 was 220INR in a Coolcab at about 1AM - How is that ?
