Most worthy charities in Northern India

We have recently returned from a most life-affirming short trip to India. Due to our timescale we stuck to the North taking in Delhi, Varanasi, Kolkata and Darjeeling. Before we left we decided not to hand out loose change to beggars and street children while in india but to donate significant amounts to reputable charities when we returned.

Now back in blighty we are trying to pinpoint the most worthy charities to donate to. Suggestions for charities in any of the cities i mentioned above and a description of their works would be much apprecitated

Perhaps look in the Volunteering and Charitable Causes Forum for some ideas.

You might alternatively seek out a reputable charity back home who you know help in India.
