Another safety practice ... Use only new machines where it's okay to swipe the card only.
It is good to know a reason for that no-processing receipt.

What would be helpful to know is which banks other than State Bank of India do consistently have swipe ATMs. SBI gives only Rs 10'000 per transaction. In previous years I used to get money from Axis outlets which take in the whole card, because they gave Rs 20'000 at a time. I never had a problem, but reading on IM about possible problems I quit that practice.

So which other banks with higher withdrawal amounts than SBI's 10'000 limit have swipe ATMs?

(I read in other threads that some AXis ATMs are swipers too. But I would like to know which banks do have all or most their ATMS with swipers).

Thanks for some answers.

It would be difficult to generalise, but the older lot of ATM's were all eat-the-card type. The newer ATM's installed over the past few years have all been swipe. Also the banks that were late in starting to install ATM's like a lot of State owned Bank's are all also on swipe.

Here in Leh the two machines are eat-the-card types, and the SBI one waits so long to give your card back tht one time I put the cash in my wallet, chatting with my friend, and was halfway down the block before someone called me back. Sheesh!

And in the J&K Bank machine, once my card got stuck inside, neither going in and processing, nor coming out. I poked around in there with another card, and it worked.

In the Telecom industry (mobile) where i used to work, when equipment in the cities was upgraded, the old equipment was used to setup NEW sites in rural areas.

May be something similar is happening here as well. as newer swipe machines get setup in larger centers, older machines are shipped to low volume areas.

It might also be a good idea to get cash before you leave a larger city, and before a busy weekend or perhaps in the midst of a busy market area. It took several ATM's on a Sunday in Kodaikanal to get the cash I needed, all were saying the transaction could not be processed (I thought they were running out of cash, & it could have been, as I came upon this situation more than once) so checked the SBI (larger) ATM and got the 10,000 with no problem.

Aah..., if only all machines were that polite! My nearest machine is a PNB one. This one just disables the OK button on the touch screen at the very last stage, if it doesn't have/doesn't want to give you any money! And that's it! No message on the screen, no printed receipt, nothing! Thankfully it has just blocked the transaction, so far, with no deductions from my account. But why not do that right at the begining?!

So I just stopped going to that machine for a while. But, recently I decided to give it another shot (because other machines are at least a couple more kms away), --- and realized that it had a mind of its own! The OK touch-button behaved strangely, with my instruction getting through only after a few seconds, when I was almost at the point of giving up, thinking it was behaving as before, and would not dispense any money. Then the money came out! Rather discomforting. It was almost as if the machine was mulling whether to dispense money to this person or not! -- And it happened the next time I tried it too!

Needless to say, I've stayed away from this smart machine since.

by pressing the cancel button....

but that's a moot point. ATMs need you to re authenticate your self before every transaction so unless you type in your pin and do nothing, hitting cancel doesn't really do much. Or shouldn't
change has had its 15 minutes.... now its time for turmoil....

PS: i maybe thejag! but call me Jag...

^^^

I would assume that sunradavi's comment is in response to the fact that many atms ask you if you want another transaction and you can say yes or no. However, in my experience if you say yes you have to put your pin in again anyway so there's no need to panic about this.

ETA: Oops, thejag got there whilst I had the page open and was browsing another thread. Oh well, same advice twice!

I read a similar post a few weeks ago, and frankly I don't see how it could be true -> they certainly don't short change you by ₹200 - and your own bank's charges should be as specified on their Agreement.

Hi,

I was the one who use VISA cards in Goa in December 2011.
I was not the only one who had to pay the 200 Rps, everybody who used the ATM had too including the Russians.
