Kochi to Goa

Hi,

I want to go from Kochi to Goa by train in mid October.

Does anyone know the train numbers?

How much is it roughly to travel First Class A/C - is first class worth it or is second fine?

Thanks
K

Hello Katy

1A isn't needed, unless you have money to burn and want to try it out for luxury, 1A tends to be less sociable than other classes.

2A is easily more than enough, and is a very comfortable way to travel.

3A is also good enough, and gets more families than the other air con classes, to me, that's the great thing about it, to other people, that's a problem.

Goa..........I wish you'd give more detail, it ALWAYS leads to better advice, at the moment, I'm forced to say that Goa isn't a town or a beach, it's a state, and the right train will depend entirely of your chosen beach in Goa.

Why are you going to Goa, you're leaving Kerala to go to a place with .......not so great beaches as Kerala.

Ernakulam Jn is the main station for Cochin.

Ernakulam-Madgaon trains and prices.

(click on train number to see prices half way down the page)

Ernakulam-Thivim trains. (for North Goa beaches.)

Ernakulam-Cancona trains. (for south Goa beaches)

Ernakulam-Karwar trains. (if going to Palolam, Karwar has more trains than Cancona, but requires a taxi into town, then a 30km bus ride to Cancona)

Thanks both

Steven - Where would you suggest travelling to in Goa if we went there? We have never been to India! Would it be better to stay in Kerala? Can you see my other thread about Kerala which details our itinerary in Kerala 'Kerala in October'. I'd be really grateful of some suggestions of where we should spend our last week.

thanks

train info

Hello,

We're expats living in Kochi for the last 2 years. We wanted to go on a weekend excusion to Goa and have been having difficulty finding a way to get there. There are no more direct flights available. The flights that are available are expensive and they take 8 hours or more with 2-3 stops. We decided to look in to going by train. Wanted to let you all know about this website I found, http://www.cleartrip.com/trains. Hope this helps.

Cleartrip is poor. (I'm being polite and won't say what I really think of it)

Goa will be difficult for a weekend trip. (I have to assume you work 9-5 monday to friday and are restricted by those hours, so a weekend trip will be leaving friday night and having to be back for monday morning)

Have you considered Murudeshwar & Jog Falls?

Train 6338 departs Ernakulam South on Fridays at 19:55 and gets to Bhatkal at 07:40 (2A, 3A, SL.) book early.

Bhatkal is about 20 kms from Murudeshwar.

At a wild guess, I'd say Jog Falls is about 60-70kms from Murudeshwar, we hired a car & driver to take us to the falls, wait for a few hours and take us back to Murudeshwar, his asking price was Rs1000, we didn't argue, we had been staying in Goa were just relieved not to be getting ripped off.

Train 1097 departs Murudeshwar on Sundays at 16:25 and gets to Ernakulam South at 05:30 (2A, 3A, SL.)

or

Train 2618 departs Bhatkal daily at 23:54 and gets to Ernakulam South at 12:10 (2A, 3A, SL.)

Make sure you see Murudeshwar at night, it's a great place.
