Indian Rupees allowed to be brought in from overseas

Hi, we are 4 Australian adults who will be touring India in Dec 2012. I would like to know how many Indian Rupees we are allowed to bring in to India. Please let me know

Better to exchange your $$ at the airport than carrying rupees from here.

You're legally not supposed to bring in any rupees but apparently they don't bother you if you do have some. They don't look for them. I never bring rupees. You can get them when you land at the airport from one of the banks -- you can change your foreign cash or use an ATM machine.

Indian Currency : Bringing Indian currency by any foreign national is prohibited. Only Indians who travel overseas frequently can bring small amount of INR. Hence please bring your country currency and get it exchanged into Rupees here.
