It's been 9 years since I was in Manali but if I remember rightly as well as a bank there were money exchange places. And I imagine maybe the same for the Rishikesh. Not sure about Kullu though. I hope some one who has been there more recently can help you out!
When changing a traveller's cheque these days most places require a photocopy of your passport at the same time, so it's handy to have some multiple copies of your passport with you.

Old Manali has plenty of places where you can change TCs - not sure re Kullu but cannot imagine there to be any lack of places to do so! Kasol was also no problem. Have fun!

Yes you can ! But this is modern age, even for India.
Why not bring an ATM card, you can draw money from any ATM here....

Like deliwala says, atm cards work all over the world. I haven't personally used travellers cheques since the late eighties.
The good thing about atm cards is they often work with more than one atm. I carry a spare somewhere else in my baggage, in case of breakage/theft etc. It's a lot less hassle. And rickshaw drivers seem to know where every atm is.

A friend changed a traveller cheque at Rishikesh ashram side at a bookstore near the Green Restaurant. We got a good rate except that they tried to cheat with the calculation, hoping we would not calculate the amount for ourselves. I myself get most of my money from ATMs. TCs plus some cash only for back-up in emergencies (cash for out in villages without ATMs with Cirrus/Maestro logo).
I also have a travelcash card, which is a prepaid sort of card, usable at ATMs. Folks in Switzerland buy it any railway station or bank: http://www.swissbankers.ch/index.php?id=337&L=3 Mastercard now offers an internationally available version: http://www.mytravelcash.com/ |
