Electron,Cirrus,Maestro and the other 2

The last time I was in S. America we had a hard time with ATM's.
Im from the US and have a debit card that only has the Mastercard symbol on it.
No Maestro,Cirrus, or anything else.
I also will have a Visa debit card that is a VISA PLUS logo on it.

My question is; do the ATM's in India only accept the Maestro/Cirrus logo cards, or will they accept straight Mastercard/Visa debit cards?

Depends on the ATM; I did find one or anoter that took only Mastercard.

Also, a couple didn't seem to work, but in some of those, the secret was to dip the card and then take it out, not leave it in during the cash operation ... no instructions to tell us that!

My experience with 2 credit cards and a debit card from Canada is that it depends on the Indian bank that runs the ATM and the bank that issued the card. Credit cards and debit cards associated with them have a good rate of success. For some cards you need to try a few banks before you find one that works. Once you find a bank, their ATM's seem to work consistently.

There are lots of ATMs and lots of banks. Citibank is common in bigger cities and they seem to like western cards.

You have both kinds of ATMs in India. Dip ATMs are better as there are no chances of your card being left in the machine.

As far as instructions are concerned, I have seen ICICI Bank instructions on screen to only dip the card and not leave it there....

Another thing is that the non Dip ATMs suck your card in, while dip machine doesn't and if you carefully notice, the insertion box is also different in design......
