not counting accommodation and intercity trains...and in my stops under 4 miles I will usually walk if an area is relatively safe for women (will be daylight hrs only)
what can I expect to pay per DAY in either USD and/or rupees for *budget but fairly healthy meals or snacks (low end restaurant or grocery) *"miscellaneous" expenses basically just trying to figure out a reasonable daily budget as I will be there for 5 months! thanks in advance for your best personal experience estimates |

There are people who have done it under 5USD/per day. I'd estimate it to be between 5-10USD per day for meals and ancillaries should be fine.

nycank...that kind of heat between November and March? in the north?
I know it's still near 90F now but...I'm surprised to hear that after all I've read & my contacts telling me to expect cold and bring a sweater! lol you learn something new everyday! right now it looks as though $5 per day is pretty much what I've got to go on til some money rolls in around the start of 2010... thanks now if I can just curb my impulsive shopping habits! |

Mumbai tends to be hot and muggy all year round Mountains are cool during Nov-Feb. Rajasthan has large temperature fluctuation as well. |

Agree with nycank on the weather and what's more, with all traffic walking 4 miles here is no mean feat. Not like you can take an easy sunday stroll on the sidewalk.
Not counting accommodation and transport, you can survive on 5 USD/day in most parts but don't count on it being fun. You do have health insurance and enough funds available to buy a plane ticket out, do you?

Have a look also at this thread: India a price guide!! Take note of posting dates. Find my very personal take on it, from just earlier this year, here.
On the weather, check also this whole thread: India climate chart.
