Cost of living in Mcleodganj/Himachal Pradesh
Hello!
I am planning on volunteering in Mcleodganj for four months, from August until December, and was wondering how much I should be budgeting for simple accomodation.
By simple, I mean, a bed, bathroom and basic cooking facilities--nothing luxurious really.
As well, as this will be my first time in India, if anyone has any tips on finding places to stay/what to look for/sites to research such things it would be much appreciated!

There are plenty of places for Rs. 200 (US$ 4) per day. For long term stay you may negotiate the rates. At Bhagsu or Dharamkot you may get rooms for even Rs. 150 (US$ 3)per day.

Furnished rooms can be rented for R4000 to R6000 per month with small kitchen and bathroom with a hot shower. I will cross post this info in your other thread. You can rent by the month at the many buildings down the stairs past the Yongling preschool, off the path past Chonor House and up Tipa Road and at a few other locations around town. You might just want to get a room for the first week or so at somewhere like Om Guest House or Yellow Guesthouse as they are cheap and centrally located. For the first 6 weeks of your stay when it rains a lot you will be glad if you get a place fairly close to where you are volunteering.
Dharamkot and Bagsu are both pretty villages but might be a bit far from your volunteer work and it is not a good idea for to walk the roads outside of town alone at night so you would be wise to take a rickshaw in the evening unless you are with a companion or two.

its not difficult to find cheaper places to stay at in mcleodganj. you can look for furnished rooms near bhagsunag road. also there is this other place called the green house which is on bhagsunag road i think it wont cost you a lot. I stayed at this place called pink house opposite yongling school on jogiwara road it was comparatively a very nice place which had rooms starting at 200 per night.
Hey JLH,
Where will you be volunteering? Are you having to pay to do so?
Good luck with finding a good place to stay
