depending on your style of traveling (giving 5 star hotels a miss ) £20 a day should suffice . this would give you transport bus train etc ,fairly good clean small business hotel ,good food and maybe some left over for a beer and a few souvenirs .So £600 no problem

In my opinion ATM's (plastic ) is the way to go ,the other options are as you say travelers cheques or cash ,both good except that i would not like to Cary to much cash .Maybe rethink on the plastic .It can give you the best exchange rate ,ATM's are in plentiful supply ,plus good security as well .

Hotels at the budget level seldom take credit cards, so you'll be better off with your ATM card than any other.
I always carry my credit card (used it 3 times on the last trip, for pricey hotels) and two ATM cards and a small amount of cash in $10 and $20 bills. You could make that sterling; I only carry US dollars because I'm American.
