Unhappy Blissfully ignorant, I just bought a wad of Rupees in the UK!

Help!

I'm leaving for India in a week. Without a care in the world, I got £500 changed into Rupees so I had a good bit of cash to start me off (the rate was great as it was an online agent)

Now I've suddenly realised (by chance, seeing a post on here) that it is in fact illegal to take Rupees in (There was no mention of this on any of the sites offering rupees, no mention in the guide book that I'd noticed etc, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered)

So... do I change them back (and lose loads of money) or not? What are the repercussions of taking 38,000 Rs into India? I know it is illegal but what is the worst case scenario if caught with this amount? I know this is a repost to an extent but I hadn't found any advice for someone who had ignorantly already got Rupees?

Any opinions appreciated, thanks

*apologies, I posted this as a reply in another thread also as it wouldn't let me make a new topic*

Where, by now, you've also been answered : Exchanging Money.

That's why double-posting isn't allowed: It just gets confusing with everyone doubling up all over the place.

Sorry about this... I thought as it was an old thread I might not get a response. Thanks for your thoughts though, really.
