ATM Fees using a Debit card only
Hi,
I searched the forum for recent threads regarding debit card fees but didn't find any. I am going this week to India for the 1st time for several months. I use several USA DCs which do not have a fee except for the 1% foreign currency exchange rate VISA charges. One of the DC also reimburses me for all other fees while the other DC does not. In Thailand, I never pay an ATM fee so, do Indian Banks have ATM fees or is it free like Thailand? When possible, I only use ATM bank machines during banking hours. Thanks |

The Indian banks do not, in my experience, charge. Any fees would be those collected by your own bank.

Even though the one DC reimburses all my fees as I stated, it appears VISA does transmit a separate fee transaction a bank might charge so I am forced to keep track of the fees and then call my bank to get my fees reversed. I had that problem when traveling in Cambodia and Vietnam. I guess it is a good problem, since at least I do get the fees back after a little work. |

Also depends on your bank and were you're from. I pay nothing extra in the Eurozone and a nominal fee (less than 2 euro's) outside that zone. The rates my bank charges are quite good.
You have to take care though, as sometimes the foreign bank also charges a fee. ATM's in te USA in shops for instance adhere to this pratice quite often.

yes, some banks do. Normally you get a seperate screen stating this, including the amount when you want to withdraw money. ou can go to another ATM or accept the 40 Rs (or so) loss.
Happy now vagabond? |
