Unless I'm reading my map wrong (it's happened), you have to go through Bangladesh to Burma and you are not allowed to enter Burma (Myanmar) by land or go through it to Thailand.

Pff, it's a regular question here, please seach around.
All I know is Myanmar only has an open land border to Thailand, and that is subject to sudden changes, so in case of, er, things not going so well. There's been talk of some border openings from Myanmar to China, which would only be one-way, I don't know which way. Anyway it's not pertinent to this plan. So in short: You cannot reasonably travel overland from India to SE Asia no.

nb What you could do is enter China, then enter SE Asia that way.
You'd need to go all the way to Pakistan in the west & up the Karakoram Highway here (no idea how safe that is at the moment) (and please do note India has no entry points into China); then travel over Tibet (bloody long and arduous way I hear); then enter into SE Asia. The area you need to do this in used to be not at all welcoming to foreigners (by official Chinese decree; i.e., you'd be officially blocked from getting through or even visiting that region. Some would manage though; friends of mine didn't; others did); I don't know what the current deal is. I think it's improved actually. Anyway I doubt if this is what the OP was asking for; just keeping my i's dotted. |

Even the Thai entry for Myanmar is reportedly for day tripping, no onward journey I am told. There is a land entry permit to enter (30 days in advance, etc.) but only know of one such case and that wasn't for a cross journey..

Ah! First time I hear of it, but really don't know about the current deal.
My understanding had so far been the Myanmar-Thai land border is technically open for onwards travel; again subject to sudden closures though (notably another anti-Karen offensive, or against other minorities no doubt, or Thailand closing down on illegal immigration, or whatever). nb India-Nepal-Tibet-China-SE Asia could be another route of course; never said to be easy either. http://www.seat61.com/ will have further pointers on it all. |
