4 annas.
--so this might be a stupid question---While looking for something in my "stuff" drawer, I found a quarter rupee coin. First it brought a smile to my face and then I wondered what I could buy for it these days, if anything. (I remember that it used to be big money in the 60s). So can I and what.

Its(the old non metric system coins) not legally accepted any more I think. The metric conversion was complete by the end of sixties - again, much before my time, so not sure.
For 25 paise, nowdays - in cities, I am not sure. Even the cheapest candies/mints cost 50 paise. 4-5 years ago I used to buy a handful of green chilies/coriander leaves for 50 paise(or often given free by the vegetable seller if you buy lots of other vegetables). So maybe you can get a few of them for 25 paise. |

My wife happened to mention yesterday that she had forgotten how many annas were in one rupee!

She was giving me the Rs3-used-to-last-a-week thing at the time!
Well, yes, in UK, 1970, my cooked lunch, with two mugs of tea, used to cost me 2/6 (12.5 pence). |

I miss the bacon flavored crisps from the UK. I forget the brand - but I think it's possible to get some packets shipped here. One more on the list of things I want to do, but may never get around to 'doing'. |

In '97 I was buying some bidis from a street vendor in Allahabad. He looked puzzled and said 'but sir, we have modern western cigarettes!' and waved a packet of Wills' Gold Flake at me...(I don't think they've been on sale in the UK since about 1958!)
