4 annas.

--so this might be a stupid question---While looking for something in my "stuff" drawer, I found a quarter rupee coin. First it brought a smile to my face and then I wondered what I could buy for it these days, if anything. (I remember that it used to be big money in the 60s). So can I and what.

Nothing - they should just abolish the use of coins here. The best you could do is give it to a beggar (Oh no, that's a different thread, and I'd best duck now)!

Its(the old non metric system coins) not legally accepted any more I think. The metric conversion was complete by the end of sixties - again, much before my time, so not sure.

For 25 paise, nowdays - in cities, I am not sure. Even the cheapest candies/mints cost 50 paise. 4-5 years ago I used to buy a handful of green chilies/coriander leaves for 50 paise(or often given free by the vegetable seller if you buy lots of other vegetables). So maybe you can get a few of them for 25 paise.

Just preserve them as collectibles.

-Oh No, nothing , you just ruined all the big plans I had for it. In the good ole days I could buy a mango icecream on a stick and have 5 paise change, by 74 i could buy a "meetha paan" or one wills flake cigarette.

Yes, skinnysim - the good ole days are gone, forever if I may add.

shashank has a good idea - it's a collectible!

Mention to her Kishore Kumar's 'Panch Rupaiya Barah Aana' (5 rupees and 12 aanas) song from Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi movie. Hope that will help her.

She was giving me the Rs3-used-to-last-a-week thing at the time!

Well, yes, in UK, 1970, my cooked lunch, with two mugs of tea, used to cost me 2/6 (12.5 pence).

Corned beef and two mugs of tea?

With cabbage too, I suspect!

Not worth 2/6.

That sounds good!
I miss the bacon flavored crisps from the UK. I forget the brand - but I think it's possible to get some packets shipped here.
One more on the list of things I want to do, but may never get around to 'doing'.

In '97 I was buying some bidis from a street vendor in Allahabad. He looked puzzled and said 'but sir, we have modern western cigarettes!' and waved a packet of Wills' Gold Flake at me...(I don't think they've been on sale in the UK since about 1958!)
