then and now
then and now
THEN AND NOW
I am treading in my memory lanes of yester years which I had in Mizoram.
In 1973 i reached Aizawal by road from Silchar. Earlier it was a memorable train journey from Guwahati to Silchar. This track was laid down by britishers to augment war efforts in WORLD WAR 2 ,it was to counter Japanese who were in Burma. Train moved in the beautiful valley, crossed number of tunnels and eye catching beauty of countryside. From silchar ,started early in the morning by mizoram transport bus. At Kola sib town had lunch and touched aizawal in the evening. After spending few weeks started for mamit village. ( now disst hqrs). MAMIT is 30kms from aizawal. Upto siarang river it was courtesy by border road truck and from sairan started for mamit on foot, it was raining and i was along with a porter moving through tracks in between the lush green forest. It is my most memorable journey. I enjoyed the scenic beauty. In the evening stayed in the house of an acquaintance of porter. MIZOS are very friendly, lovable and honest people. At that time drinking water was to be fetched from 'tuikhur'( water point) , i.e., far away from the house. It was to be carried in the bamboo pipes. Warm water was provided for bathing and after that had local drinks' tutling' made of rice. It tastes like beer. Besides that rice and local vegetables dishes were served . It was so mouthwatering and sumptuous that still after 35 years i enjoy that taste. It was sprinkled with love and affection . i wonder ,I do not remember the name of the lovely couple with so warm and pure heart who provided food and stay in those days when insurgency was order of the day. I stayed number of times with them during my visits to aizawal from mamit and back . i will always remain thankful to all the mizo friends with whom i had shared the moment of joy and agony .I have learnt from them how to keep ones cool and vision intact without being colored by prejudice and adverse conditions either natural or man made. in mamit where i stayed for 4 years i vividly recall a character nick name khalifa meaning (a tailor cum shopkeeper).he was a bengali muslim married to a local girl. i along with other friends had enjoyed number of times homely food at his home. From MAMIT i went to CHAMPAI a road connected town ( now disst hqrs) bordering burma. There was a church built in 18th centuary by britishers. Champhai is known as rice bowl of Mizoram, traders from burma (manmyar) used to bring foreign goods. now trade is being channelized. champhai is most picturesque place . after a year stint at champhai returned to aizawal, the capital town of mizoram.the scenic beauty of mizoram in general and champhai in particular is comparable to any known and famous hill stations in the country,.mizoram is progressing in every field. it is most peaceful state of north east region. mizo friends are are coming out of mizoram and acheiving new heights in every sphere of life.
To visit mizoram one has to obtained inner line permit from liaison/ resident commissioner mizoram house located in silchar, kolkata, guwahati, delhi.there are flights from delhi, gauhwati and kolkata.
