Hello again Karikor.
We are leaving New Delhi for Shillong on Monday next i.e. 27 May 2013 and shall be in Shillong before nightfall, or a little after. I have a two-week plus programme in Shillong, out of which the first 7 days till 3 June 2013, my family will be with me, and thereafter after they leave for Kolkaka I shall be on my own till 12 June 2013, searching for those lost yet memorable years of my life there. As u know, I spent the early years of my life in Shillong.......precisely in Upper Shillong, where my dad served in Central Government Service in the CSO Shillong there. We shall be staying in our ancestral house near Laban, and may be a couple of days we shall stay in Cherrapunji as well. Given the enormous time at my disposal, I would request you to draw an itinerary for me, in which the first 7 days with my family are utilized for seeing Shillong in toto......and the next 7 days I can see for myself, trying to gather those years of my life that are sunk down the memory lane.
In Shillong, we would like to see Smit Village, Laitlum Canyons, Sweet Falls, Wankhar Butterfly Museum, Barapani and Pinewood Hotel of course, the Polo Grounds, Golf Course, Wards Lake, Lady Hyderi Park, Anglican Cemetery, Umiam Lake, Umiam Water Sports Complex, Nehru Park, Police Bazar, Civil Hospital, Laitumkrah, Laban, Ramakrishna Mission, Umlingka, Upper Shillong, Bara Bazar, the Military Cantonment Area, Happy Valley, Mawphlang, Sacred Grove, Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak.....and what else.
In Cherrapunji, we would invariably do the Double Decker Living Root Bridge trek, the single-decker root-bridge trek at Riwai, visit places like Skywalk for a view of Bangladesh, Kynrem Falls, Khoh Ramhah, Thangkharang Park, Noh Sngi Thiang Falls,Eco Park,Mawsmai Cave, Saitsophen, Wah Kaba Falls, Dain Thlen Falls, Sohra Market, Dain Thlen Falls, Wahi Kaba Falls, Noh Kalikai Falls (having the two highest single-drop waterfalls of India),Noh Ka Likai Falls,Mawlynnong Village(Asia's cleanest village).....and what else.
Lol, would the Khasi Mandarin Oranges be available now lol.
I would like to spend an entire day in the second half of my trip visiting my School.......St. Edmund's School in Laitumkhra. The area also has the prestigious Loreto Convent. Again, I would like to spend a full day, if not more, in the latter half of my trip, in Upper Shillong....the CSO complex where I have the fondest of memories of my childhood. Umlingka I'd like to visit there, the missionary school there, and my childhood-friend Audie Michael Read Diengdoh who stayed there near the petrol-pump and with whom I used to go to school with.Amazing years, lost to the memory lane lol.
Hope you can draft me an itinerary that takes care of my family's interests of sight-seeing and my personal nostalgic interests, both.......lol, may be a tough ask for you. I would like to run around those pines in Upper Shillong yet again....they were our friends there coz there weren't much people there during those days, except those staying within the Government Complex. I would again love to catch those grass-hoppers and butterflies with my pullover lol.....there were so any varieties of flowers there and hence the butterflies of all colour-combinations.
Last, not least, hope to meet you Karikor in Shillong.
Thank you.

Hello again Karikor.

The program is as follows:

May 27 : Departure from New Delhi and arrival at Shillong. Staying at our ancestral house near Laban.

May 28 to 3 June : Need to cover both Cherrapunji and Shillong as thoroughly as possible, and would prefer to halt at Cherrapunji for a couple of days at least.

In Cherrapunji, to cover places as follows:
Start sight-seeing from Kynrem Falls, move up to Khoh Ramhah,Thang Kharang Park, Noh Sngi Thiang Falls (Seven Sisters Falls), Eco Park, Mawsmai Cave, Saitsophen, Wah
Kaba Falls, Dain Thlen Falls, Noh Kalikai Falls (the two highest single-drop waterfalls in India are here), Sohra Market, Ramakrishna Mission.........and what else lol.

In Shillong, to cover places as follows:
Visit Smit village, Laitlum Canyons, Sweet Falls, Wankhar Butterfly Museum, Barapani (or Umiam Lake and Umiam Water-Sports Complex), Polo Grounds, Gold Course, Wards
Lake, Lady Hyderi Park, Anglican Cemetery, Nehru Park, Police Bazar, Barabazar, Laitumkhra, Civil Hospital, Laban, Upper Shillong, Umlingka, Military Cantonment Area.......
and what else lol.

On the way from Cherrapunji to Shillong, to cover places as follows:
Mawlynnong village (Asia's cleanest village), Mawphlang, Happy Valley, Sacred Grove, Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak.....and what else lol.

To also cover Skywalk for a view of Bangladesh, the single decker root bridges at Riwai village, and the double decker living root-bridge at Cherrapunji.
Also please let me know where I could see the icicles, if at all now lol.

In between, I plan to show my family my school and our residence when we were in Shillong.......St. Edmund's School in Laitumkrah and CSO Shillong at Upper Shillong where I spent my childhood.......so a day each in these two places, or at least a day combined for both.

June 4 : Off to Guwahati Airport to see off my family who have a pre-set program for Kolkata. Me returns to Shillong though, for another 7 days.
June 5 to June 11 : All of Shillong to myself for re-visiting my childhood.
June 12: Return flight from Guwahati Airport to New Delhi.

Thats the broad itinerary Karikor. Help me in the fine-tuning and let me know what else to add to it.....there is no dearth of time and I want to see Shillong thoroughly again. Hope am able to meet you in Shillong as well, in person.

Thank you.

Karikor, also let me know the following:

1. How far from Sohra (Cherrapunji) is Nongthymai and is it worth it that I stay in Nongthymai if I dont find accommodation in Cherrapunji?
2. I understand that Nongkhnum Island, Nongstoin, Umroi, Mairang, Kyllang Rock, Jakrem, Mawkyrwat, Mawthadraishan Peak,, Ri Bhoi, Diengiei Peak, Dwarksoid, , Mawjymbuin Cave,Symper Rock etc. are some other tourist spots. Also is it possible to visit Nongkhnum Island by car via the villages of Lawse,Mawduh and Mawthar via Weinia Falls via Kynshi, Namliang and Phanliang Rivers via Shadthum Falls. Please draft me an itinerary covering as many nice places as I can possibly see........as, having grown up in Shillong, I like to do some treks also. They say walking is the fashion in the Hills, not driving lol.
Thank you.

By the way, im not aware of any place call nongthymmai near sohra. However, if you agree with my itinerary- for sohra, try first cherra holiday resort at Laitkynsew then Sa-i-Mika park then Coniferous resort.

Thanks for your reply Karikor. However, there are a lot of points clashing with what I have in mind. Firstly, I would generally be based in our ancestral house, except for a few days in Cherrapunji where we intend to check into a hotel. Secondly, you haven't said whether its possible for us to meet up somewhere lol. Thirdly, in Shillong I need may be 2-3 full days, one for showing out my school St. Edmunds to my family.......am a proud Edmundian of course, and the second full day at CSO Shillong where we stayed during my childhood days. These would be nostalgic moments and a must in the first-leg of the tour. Cherrapunji I intend to cover thoroughly and extensively in the first-leg itself. Also I intend to cover entire Shillong like Wards Lake, Barapani, Lady Hyderi Park, Police Bazar etcetra in the first leg itself.
I can devote more time to the lesser-known places during the second leg of my trip when I am with a few relations of mine. You need to re-draft the itinerary keeping in mind these few points. Will take up the discussion with you in a later post today. Anyways, thank you for the effort.

Ya great, that looks far better. Let me move into the nitty-gritty then:

27th - Reach Shillong. Halt.
28th & 29th - Shillong Halt. See my school, visit Upper Shillong and our "home" there, go to Umlingka and meet old pals if around there, Ward Lake, Barapani, Lady Hyderi Park, Polo Grounds, Golf Course, Police Bazar, bit of Bura Bazar possibly.....let me have your inputs if I would be able to cover all these places in these two days.
30th & 31st - To Sohra via Mawphlang Sacred Grove, Elephant Falls and Shillong Peak. Overnight halt at Sohra. To cover all the places in Cherrapunji and suburbs starting from Kynrem Falls,Khoh Ramhah, Thang Kharang Park, Noh Sngi Thiang Falls, Eco Park, Mawsmai Cave,Saitsophen,Wah Kaba Falls,Dain Thlen Falls, Noh Kalakai Falls, Sohra Market, Ramakrishna Mission,Laitkynsew, Nongriat Village,Mawsynram Village, Mawjymbuin Cave,Symper Rock, the single-root bridge at Riwai and the double-decker living root-bridge and a visit to Skywalk for a view of Bangladesh.......let me know if all this is really possible in two days and can this be done by trek or do we need to hire a cab. Also do I need an extra 3rd night-stay at Sohra. Sohra is a big part of our visit. We plan to move out of Sohra on 1st afternoon.
1st - Out of Cherrapunji and headed to Shillong via Mawlynnong village, via Mawphlang. Halt in Shillong.
2nd & 3rd - More of Shillong. Let me know what do I add here. Is Nongkhnum Island possible by hired-car or does it involve treks? Want to see Ranikor as well, if its worth it. List of places we have in mind for these two days are Nongkhnum Island,Jakrem,Mawkyrwat,Mawtha draishan Peak,Nongstoin,Umroi,Mairang,K yllang Rock, Ri Bhoi District, Diengiei Peak,Dwarksoid, Smit and Nongkrem villages,Laitlum Canyons,Sweet Falls, Wankhar Museum,Anglican Cemetery, Cathedral Catholic Church, Spread Eagle Falls and what more.......a round-about of Laitumukhrah starting from Don Bosco side and ending towards the Loreto Convent side lol.

Further fine-tuning required for the first-leg Sir. Please edit and rectify my post by deleting whatever is not possible, and scheduling the remainder in series and in such a way that they get covered systematically one by one.
Sorry for bothering you a lot lol. Thank you so much for the effort that you have been putting in for me.

Yaa this looks fair enough for me, though I dont know most of these places lol.
Yaa, point taken....I do have an evening flight. Hope the route via Ranibari doesn't get blocked, and public transport is available on this stretch as I would be taking public transport only on this day, because my family wouldn't be with me.
Would like to spend more time in my school, in Police Bazar and in Upper Shillong during these days. And thereafter the lesser known places. Anyways, I shall be back in Shillong regularly hereafter to see my roots and my past here. There's no better place than Shillong, apart from the Himalayas where I've been to till date. Have you been to the Himalayas yet, Karikor? If not, I'm here to help you lol.
Thanks yet again for all your effort.

P.S. The only road to Cherrapunji is via Upper Shillong I guess, via CSO Shillong......correct me if I am wrong here, Karikor.
