Hi All,

We are planning a trip to Shillong & Cherrapunjee from 24th to 29th May and would like to do as much as we can in those days we have. Yes, it is less than a week away. It was a quickly made plan and Flight tickets are already booked.

We are 4 adults travelling from Bangalore.
-------------------------------------
Rough Itinerary is as follows:

Day 1 24th May
Reach Guwhati by 2 PM
Travel to Umsaw khwan and stay the night

Day 2 25th May
Kaziranga National Park ( 97 Kms 2 hours ?)
and reach back Shillong and stay the night

Day 3 26th May
Laitlum Canyons
Elephant falls
Donbosco centre
Mawjymbuin Cave
Police bazar
Shillong to cherapunji ( 68 Kms 2 hours?)
Mawsmai Cave
Stay at Cherapunji

Day 4 27th May
Living root bridge and back to shillong ( 87 Kms , 2.5 hours?)

Day 5 28th May
Dowki and Mawlynnog Village ( 100 Kms 2 hours)

Day 6 29th May
Start by 1pm Guwhati
-------------------------------------
My questions:

- Is the above a decent plan? Else, can you suggest how we can make this better without cramming too much? We have not booked stay in any place. In Shillong, we have someone arranging the stay. Stay in Cherrapunji is yet to be booked.

- Living Root bridges - I heard the trek there is tough. One of us travelling has certain health conditions which may make it difficult to do a tough trek. But she do not want to miss this. So, how tough is it and any advice on how to manage this?

Hoping to get a quick reply.

Regards
Deepa

Kaziranga is not 97 km but around 250km from Umiam lake or 6 hours. Besides I advice you to check up with the park management as I think they must be closed by now.

This is what I would suggest:

24th- reach guwahati. Proceed to umiam lake. Halt
25th- proceed to sohra. Enroute halt at shilling peak, elephant falls, mawphlang sacred grove
Sohra local sightseeing. Halt
26th- double decker living roots bridge . Proceed to mawlynnong. Halt
27th- after lunch proceed to shillong.halt
28th- shillong sightseeing. Halt
29th- proceed to guwahati.

Would you have any suggestion on stay in Mawlynnog?
Sohra options are Cherapunjee Holiday Resort, Coniferous, SaiMika, By the way or Polo orchid resoort, right? Do you think we will get something this late? If not, any other options are there?

Mawlynnong, I guess you can check duranto jajabar's trip report on the homestay. As for Sohra, do try cherra holiday resort first, if that does not come through, try sa-i-Mika. You will have to work out the logistics part (tourist cab) of the trip as well. What about shillong? By the way, can you add few more days?

We are staying in Siloam in Shillong. Have some contacts there and we are getting some help with cab as well.
About Sohra and Mawlynnog, I will try your suggestions. I hope it is not too late though...

Our flight tickets back to Bangalore is already booked. I wish we had some more days.

I had another question on Living roots bridge trek. Do you know how difficult it is?

Well Deepa,

You are very lucky to get accomodation at Siloam. Father George runs a very neat place. And according to me it is the best place besides the lake. By the way, the place just before Siloam offers kayaking activities in the lake. I think they charge like 500 an hour. Can definitely try out in the evening before dusk.

By the way, had you had some more days, I would have suggested a couple more places. Anyway that can always be Meghalaya Part II.

As for the Double Decker Living Roots Bridge trek, it is physically demanding. However the mantra to it, is take it slow. Don't rush through it. Hence i have not suggested anything else for that day. Better start early by 7am, so that you can reach the starting point by 2-3pm and have lunch at Cherra Holiday Resort. After lunch, proceed to Mawlynnong and have a well deserved sleep. By the way, don't worry, a friend of mine with a pace maker on did the trek in 6 hours. So you should be fine if you relax.
Else what you can do is on 25th, you do the double Decker just after having lunch at Sohra Holiday Resort, or you can just pack to save time. Halt at the guesthouse near the bridge and then come back up next morning. And then do the sohra sightseeing then proceed to mawlynnong. You can ask Cherra Holiday Resort for the contact details of the guest house near the double Decker.

We heard a lot of wonderful things about Siloam and very excited to visit too.. I really wish that we had more guidance before we booked the tickets. We could have spent a couple more days. As you say, it has to be Meghalaya part 2:-)

Your reply on the trek put my mind at ease. I think we can manage that. Thanks a ton!

Tried reaching Chera resort guys. They only have executive rooms available on 25th which is 3.8k plus. I think it is too much.
Sa-I-Mika, not getting through the mobile numbers and landline, nobody is lifting:-(

I will try other options in Sohra too. Any recommendations?

I will advice you to try to wait for Sa-I-Mika till evening. Keep on trying, If nothing is fruitful, you may try Coniferous Guest House/Resort.

Hi Karikor. Hope you remember me lol. I was in IndiaMike long time back but can't remember the password and the e-mail address that I was using at that point of time. I remember we had a good friendship going. Anyways, I would be in Shillong next week on a trip-nostalgia.....I spent my childhood in Shillong. Hope to meet you there, if possible. And if you could help me in the trip as well.
Added you as a friend all over again lol. Do reciprocate and respond back. Thank you.
